After numerous hours searching for hotels in/near Washington D.C. (yes I even read thread today on Washington D.C. someone started) I have found a VRBO in Alexandria. It is a 3 block walk to Metro station (a house). Total is $1100 for 5 nights which is a great price- the reviews are outstanding and owner responds promptly.

My question is: Is this a good location to stay in for a trip to D.C.? I know we would take Metro in and be there for the day. All the hotels I have found run well over $200-$300 and then taxes and parking.

Read about the tickets to White House and sent off request today and all the tours. The only thing I can't find info on is Colonial Williamsburg. How far is that? Is it too touristy or is it worth the visit?

THANKS! We want a safe area so I guess that is also what I need to know is there a 'bad' area in Alexandria.

Colonial Williamsburg would be good on a separate trip IMHO--it is about 3 or so hours away and is worthy of 2-3 days of living history and museums. I wouldn't try to sqeeze it into the same trip as there is so much in DC alone. (We went to Williamsburg for 5 days in september for homeschool days.)

Alexandria is a perfect location--and a great deal for getting a house! It is on the blue line I believe, so a quick hop downtown. There is also stuff to see in old town Alexandria. If you would like to visit a historical home--Mount Vernon isn't too far away.

What metro stop is it near? I live in Alexandria, so I can tell you if the house is in a good neighborhood or not. We live right near the King St metro, and it is a very nice area. Old Town is a great place to stay with lots of shops and restaurants and it is very simple and fast to get into DC. I'm a stay at home mom and DS and I usually head into DC to visit a museum about once a week.

If you would like any suggestions about Alexandria, feel free to send me a PM, I'd be happy to help out.
