Trying to start planning for 2013. It's not the kind of cruise where you don't mind staying on the ship instead of exploring the ports and the excursions are quite pricey, esp for a family of 4.

Just curious...

We stayed on the conservative side--no floatplanes/helicopters, doing some on our own. I am spending about 400/pp.

I booked all my own directly, for the 3 stops, the total was about $550/person. We did floatplane, whale watching, and train/Yukon trip.

Things are so much more then Mexico.

Liarsville and salmon bake with Disney Characters $316 3 adults 1 kid

Sled Dog Summer Musher Camp Skagway 4 109 adults $89 kids booked on own

Glacier Trek II booked on own $395 a person

Misty Fjords helicopter own is $ 289 adult /$239 kids
Helicopter Bears booked on own $314
Whales booked on own &125 adult $69 kids

In Ketchican there was a neat taxi cab tour for $75 an hour.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

My hubby and I are booked on the August 16th Alaska cruise this year. We are doing one excursion per port, and our total will be just under 1100$. We are doing the All Aboard Steam Train in Skagway, the Alaska Whales & Rainforest Trails in Juneau and the Mountain Point Snorkeling in Ketchikan.

Hope this helps!

Aby

We are doing the Alaskan Nature and Wildlife Expedition in Skagway, the Adults Exclusive Whale Watching, Mendenhall Glacier and Salmon Bake in Juneau and the Saxman Native Village in Ketchikan. Total cost per person is $429.00. I think you can go as expensive or inexpensive as you want (or can afford).

We spent close to $1,000.00 per person (booked with Disney) IMO worth every penny

We did White Pass Rail/Yukon Suspension Bridge @ $172 pp in Skagway.

Whale Quest and Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau @ $165 pp.

Saxman Village and Lumberjack Show in Ketchikan @ $102 pp.

We really enjoyed all three and felt we got our money's worth!

We spent about $700 pp. We did Skagway Train/Liarsville/Red Onion and Ziplining in Ketchikan and Helicopter to Glacier Walkabout in Juneau.

Worth every penny...awesome time.

Skagway: Laughton Glacier Wilderness Hike and Rail Adventure - $225 per person

Juneau: Whale Watching/Salmon Bake/Mendenhall Glacier (Adult only) - $189.00 per person

Ketchikan: Shopping - No excursion planned (figured we would be too tired after two long excursions on back to back days.)

Total for two adults: $828

My brother and his family just did the same itinerary on Holland America and they did no excursions. He told me they did not have a lot of fun as the ports were pretty dead (Ketchikan excepted).

Even though excursions are expensive, plan ahead and try to at least do something in a couple of the ports.

Oh, I totally agree. Some cruises are not all about the ports such as Bahamas or Caribbean. Others are ALL about the ports such as Alaskan or Mediterranean.

Planning is the key. 2yrs ago the prices got so good that we wound up booking less than 6wks out, still I did tons of planning. First get an idea of what's available. Next set your total budget for the trip. You may want to be frugal in order to splurge on one special thing. Then look for discounts(I suggest Toursaver discount books).

We were 2 adults w/a 2yo & 6yo and we left from Whittier, where we did the Prince William Sound tour. $109pp. The b1g1 coupon saved us $236 which covered the cost of guides at $100ea so I won't count that.

Skagway we rented a car for $140 and drove up to the Yukon using a $5 guide we downloaded. It was written by a local and was spot on. It even told us where to start looking for bears. We didn't have to look too hard as one decided to sit on the highway just in front of us. $35pp

Juneau-DH & DD did the helicopter/dog mushing($500pp) while my 2yo & I window shopped. $250pp

Ketchikan-DH & DD did the Deadliest Catch tour. $169pp(but we used the b1g1 free coupon from the TS guide. DS & I did the nature tour. Normally $45pp and I had b1g1 coupon but the guide offered to let 2yo go free and then took off another $10 when I said I had the b1g1 anyway. $51pp.

Total+ $505pp or $2020 for 4. Both children were charge as if they were adults except for $10 discount in Ketchikan.

Hijacking! But would you please post how your Skagway excursion went. I leave on 8/30 and have that schedule...thanks

I am doing the one excursion in skagway with my own stuff in Ketchikan and Juneau to aleviate the costs. This way I have some spending money:rotfl:

Skagway - Yukon Expedition / $202 pp
Juneau - Orca Enterprises / $100 pp
Ketchikan - Island Wings Misty Fjord & Glacier Tour / $365 pp
Ketchikan - Trolley Tour / $42 pp

I booked the Yukon Expedition and Trolley Tour excursions directly with Disney. Orca Enterprises and Island Wings I booked on my own and well in advance.

We enjoyed all of our excursions. Happy to answer any questions.

We are on the August 16 Alaska cruise this year. Our scheduled excursions are (per person)
