Alamo Sunpass Policy

I have a question about Alamo's toll policy which is:
  • $3.95 fee per usage day (24 hr. interval) that customer incurs tolls, plus tolls (at posted cash/TOLL-BY-PLATE rates)
  • $19.75 maximum fee per rental period plus tolls (at posted cash/TOLL-BY-PLATE rates)
  • Opt-in decision is made when the driver elects to use EXPRESS, SunPass ONLY, E-PASS ONLY or LeeWay ONLY lanes.
If I am not a FL resident, does it make sense for me to get the Sunpass? I mean, the removable one is $19.99 which, although just a quarter less, is still more than Alamo. Furthermore, I will only get charged the $3.95 on the days when I actually use it. Theoretically speaking, isn't it that I would pay the same for using Sunpass as I would using Alamo's?

Also, has anyone had any trouble with using Alamo's system, like over-charging, etc?

Thank you so much for your advice and time!

if your visit is a one time thing, and you'll actually only encounter tolls a few days then I would not buy a SUNPASS

if you come down frequently or will stay for a month and drive toll roads regularly I'd buy one.

I've had mine for a LONG time.

p.s. don't forget that in the Orlando area, MOST tolls can still be paid in cash. NOT SO around Miami . . .

Alamo and National use the same programs. It's one of the better rental car SunPass programs. I've used it with National when our trip included Southern Florida. You don't get a transponder because the system is based on license plates.

You don't have to opt in or opt out ahead of time. If you use a SunPass lane (whether on purpose or accidentally), you've opted in for that day. The toll(s) and fee(s) will hit your credit car a couple of weeks after you return you car as separate charge.

If you pay all your tolls in cash, you don't incur a charge on your credit card.

If you're only traveling between Orlando Airport and and the tourist corridor, paying cash tolls is cheap and easy. On the northern route, there are two toll plaza each way. On the southern route, there are two plazas each way if you get off at exit 6 (and get on the same place when you head back to the airport).

In either case, pay attention and keep right. There are attended lanes that provide change and receipts. You don't need a pocket full of quarters. (If you stay on the southern route beyond exit 6, you'll have to pay a cash toll with quarters.) If you only use attended lanes, always get a receipt. That way, you have proof that you paid.

Once you're in the tourist area, you can visit all parks at WDW, Universal, and SeaWorld without encountering toll plazas.

If you're heading to Southern Florida, it's a different story. The Miami area has a bewildering network of toll locations, and many are unattended.

People can and do get their own SunPass transponders, which they can use year after year. But it's not without risk. The license plate on your rental car is still registered to SunPass as belonging to your rental car company. If a reader fails to pick up your transponder, you'll still be charged with the toll and fee on your credit card.

We will travel from the airport to WDW and then to the Daytona Beach area. We are currently planning on paying cash for our tolls. Do you think we will encounter any tolls that we won't be able to pay in cash?

There are Cash lanes going to Daytona either handing over money or placing coins into Basket ( & sometimes Missing Basket )

Are there tolls between SSR and Busch gardens or SSR and Legoland that are / are not cash?
Normal, direct routes from Saratoga Springs to Busch Gardens Tampa or LEGOLAND Florida do not include toll roads.

Play with Google Maps. If a route requires tolls, it will tell you, "This route has tolls."

Has anyone used their Sunpass transponder on their Alamo rentals here? What was your experience? We have a transponder and plan on using it but don't wanna get double charged.

Worked fine on our last 3 or 4 rentals with Alamo. No double charges.
I always forget to remove the transponder from the vehicle when we drop it off.
The reps must be on the lookout for this, always remind me or take it out and hand it to me.

wish our EZpass would work in Florida

after driving from Sanford two different trips since November on 417 have decided it's time to get a sunpass to avoid merging in heavy rush hour traffic eeek.

thought I had to stop at publix to buy a transponder, appears it can be purchased online for $19.99. didn't go thru the whole process tho.

can i assume i link a credit card and it fills to minimum level automatically?

You can set the auto top-up if you'd like or you can do manual top-ups with a credit card and just top up as much as you like.
If you don't have a CC or don't want to use it online, you can use cash to top up at lots of locations in Florida like CVS pharmacy, Chevron, Marathon etc.

I haven't seen any additional fees and you actually get a discount on the tolls by using your own Transponder (10-15%)

We have been visiting FL 2-4 times/year for the past 5 or 6 years and the Transponder has been a wonderful time/stress saver for us. Highly recommended if you visit the area semi-regularly (once a year or more) especially if you are going to be in southern FL (Miami, The Keys etc), lots of Cashless tolls down there.

When you order online it will ask you to enter a vehicle and licence plate number, just enter your own vehicles info. When you arrive in Fl and get your vehicle, use the Sunpass app on your smartphone to enter this vehicles info into your Sunpass account (before you leave the parking garage).
This is mainly just a safety precaution incase the Transponder didn't register correctly or something.

Basically when you go through a Sunpass lane the Transponder is picked up by the receiver in the lane and a toll is charged to your account. If the transponder isn't detected, a camera takes a picture of the licence plate on the vehicle and this goes to Platepass. If you have registered the rental vehicle to your Sunpass account, Platepass will now see the plate is registered to a Sunpass account and the toll is billed as usual to your Sunpass account.

In this same scenario (Transponder not detected), if you didn't add the rental vehicle info to your Sunpass account, Platepass would send the Toll to the owner of the plate (rental company) and you would be billed by the rental company for the Toll + the admin fee.

it will eventually .. supposedly by the end of this year but we'll just have to see ... Congress has said all the systems must play together by the end of this year. SUNPASS was a very early system and has had to replace some parts to become compatible with EZ. For example they replaced my old (real old) transponder with a new one for free last year as a step along the way

Yes, they say it will ship in 5 working days, US Mail; others here have done it and no complaints

can i assume i link a credit card and it fills to minimum level automatically? Yes, or you can set to fill 'manually'

Just remember that if using it in a rental, register the rental tag in the SUNPASS system else you could still end up "zapped" if the transponder is not read. Then when you return the rental, delete the tag from your account. There's an APP and it takes less than a minute.
