Alamo car rental experience

I was going to be in town for just 2.5 days this past weekend, so I picked the cheap Alamo weekend deal of a Chevy Cobalt or similar 4 door for $64 all in for a 3 day rental that had to include a Saturday night. On arrival, they had none, but gave me a Monte Carlo coupe. This was the "standard" upgrade per the desk lady. While the garage was full of Malibu Maxx's and G6's, they wouldn't budge on giving me one unless I paid the rate for those (over 2x my rate). Given there were just two of us we took the Monte and headed off. As this wasn't a Disney trip, but a central Florida college visit trip, the comfortable coupe seating and huge trunk were all we needed. Gas mileage at 25 mpg for the trip was only average due to the bigger 3.9L 240HP V-6 in the rental. This was offset by relatively cheap gas (low of $1.989 in north central FL and high of $2.279 near Daytona). So for $64.19 we got 684 miles of rental car usage and paid just under $60 for gas to fill the car.

Lessons learned - sign-up for the "cheap deals" email with Alamo to get good rates on short notice and be flexible in what you expect to get when you arrive later in the night (8 pm).

LOL - yep! In Las Vegas earlier this year, it was after midnight on a Saturday (aka VERY early Sunday) when I checked in at the Alamo counter. I went out to pick up my car and there were no compacts... or subcompacts, or midsizes, or intermediates... the couple ahead of me got some type of luxury sedan. I got an SUV for the compact rate!

Hubby and I went to Vegas this past April and rented a car. First time there for both of us and I swear if we ever go again I will not rent a car. I am not a great heavy traffic driver. So, I thought I had it planned to stay off Las Vegas Blvd. since it was a Saturday night when we arrived. Well, I got lost leaving the car rental place and ended up on Las Vegas Blvd. It was a mess......lol

That's great....we got a convertible b/c that was all that was left in the evening, we had paid for a compact to make it an economical trip

Was it a Chrysler Sebring?

That is what we have reserved and I'm thinking we might have space issues.

3 adults and 1- 8 YO.
2 Carry on sized bags,
1 mid sized duffel
and 1 size up from a carry on suite case.

Am I crazy?

I've never driven a convertible and i want to feel the wind on my balding head LOL!

Yes, it was the Sebring. DD was thrilled for the week but it taught me I would never buy one. Sounds like no real luggage for you, so you'll be fine. It should all fit in the trunk but worse case, the two carry ons go in the back seat

Thanks for the info. I am renting from Alamo in December and won't be arriving at the airport until late.
