Has anyone stayed in one of the new ADA studios in AKV? How are they? I have one booked for my brother for our Jan trip. I was trying to get savannah view but the only ADA room was standard view. (He needs a roll in shoer, grab bars, extra space etc because he is in a power chair).

We stayed at the BWI & BWV (in a one bedroom) last June and he was in his glory. He had so much space and everything was functional for him (space and the bathrooms). I do not want to disappoint him or make him feel uncomfortable even though I want to stay at AKV I will change the ressie if I have to! TIA:goodvibes

Maybe a mod could move this off of the community board to the regular disAB for better results?

I have stayed in one and it's still huge. We loved the big flat screen TV and the way the room was laid out which made it seem much larger. I had no trouble maneuvering in a power wheelchair. They do have savannah view accessible rooms with roll in showers but perhaps they were already reserved when you made your reservation. Be sure to check back with Member Services as I was told they are regularly adding inventory as more units are declared into DVC Most of the DVC standard/value view rooms are pool views- there are lots of savannah viewing areas throughout the resort and they're all accessible but someone needs to open the door to the ones that are covered outdoor areas. My only issue with all the DVC units except OKW is the pull out sofa bed - they just aren't that comfortable and would be a challenge to do a transfer into because they're so low to the ground.---Kathy

With him in a power chair you really do want a roll in shower HA room. Anything else just wouldn't give him enough room & would be very inconvenient for him. I'm really hoping that dclfun is correct in that there are Savannah View roll in shower rooms. As she said maybe they were already booked? We are dvc members & AKV is definitely on our list of places we want to stay!

Good Luck!

Per ADA law there has to be a fully accessible room in each room type available at each resort. I do know from my own conversation with a supervisor at MS that since there are still units being declared into inventory with DVC ( basically finished being converted ) then not all the rooms are available yet that will be available in the future. I was also told this by Special Services as they are getting frequent updates too about the villa accommodations. If you booked through MS and really wanted a Savannah View accessible studio room with roll in shower then it's best to be put on a waitlist for this room type for your vacation with a notation of the room accommodations that are required. Also since people who need this type of room tend to book early, even before their own plans are confirmed, there could be cancellations of the room you wanted.---Kathy

Thanks Kathy! That is good to know! :goodvibes

Thank you for your help everyone!

Kathy- I am so glad to hear the rooms are spacious because I think that is what bothers him most- when the room is too tight for him to turn!

Now I feel better...Now is it January yet?:rotfl:

I can definitely relate to concerns about a room being crowded, not being able to turn or maneuver without fear of gouging out a wall or furniture, and even just feeling "closed in" due to the chair being in the room. I wish I had a photo to share of the AKV studio we had but when we entered the room, our jaws dropped to see how beautiful it was. Don't forget to continue to check back with MS about the savannah view room as who knows, pixie dust may come your way when more of the units are declared into DVC.---Kathy

Most of the DVC standard/value view rooms are pool views- Kathy

We just booked a value studio yesterday for late September. Special Reservations was unable to find a fully accessible unit available for us. Since we are only staying a couple of nights, I took a regular accessible unit they had available and they said they could bring a shower bench and hand held shower head for us. Do you know if the regular accessible units are pool view also? I would be thrilled with that, as I figured we wouldn't have a view at all being it was value unit!

I booked a value unit in September for a visit with my neice and it is fully accessible with roll in shower. I believe "value" with the AKV studios means it's a bit smaller than the other type studios and only sleep 4 vs. 5 but most are pool view rooms. I hope your needs are met- my concern would be the width of the bathroom door if someone needs to transfer from a w/c.---Kathy
