Hello all,

We had to make a change in our sailing dates, and as a result, had to switch from Beach Club to AKL for the land part of our trip. The CM on the phone told me that all DCL rooms are Savannah View, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that they are not the most desirable of the Savannah View Rooms.

Can anyone on here who has stayed at AKL with the Land/Sea package provide any insight into what sections the rooms might be in?

Thanks, and take care,

Bill

You are absolutely correct. I did the land/sea in May and specified the delux Savannah view and never regretted it for one minute...cost a bit more but it was a treat to throw open the drapes at 7AM and see the trucks arriving to stuff treats in the tree-mounted giraffe feeders and the giraffes arriving to snack.....
I was in room number 3234, in the Kudu Trail section. Note...That is a handicapped accessible room.

Hello,

Thanks for responding.

Would you happen to know what sections they use for the DCL rooms, or is it anybody's guess? I'm hoping to get one of the rooms facing the big Savannah , not one fo the smaller ones. Last time I stayed in a Savannah view room at AKL we had a room overlooking a large pen type area, and a small savannah, which really made for a tough spot to see any animals. It basically was the Savannah that would be in the area to the rear of the check in desk in terms of placement, if that makes any sense. The last time we stayed we ended up with pool view, and it was nice for the price.

Take care,

Bill

If you want the big savannah view, you need to specify the delux room. We stayed in a delux before and it was wonderful. Didn't think to ask for one with our cruise and I was so disappointed. The room was in the corner near the pen that the other poster referred to. We were told that this is the area outside of the fire escape and the area is fenced to keep the animals (especially those big cattle with horns) away from the people in case of evacuation. The room was also on the main floor, so we were not even up high enough to barely see over the fence and the pen is large and the animals can't get very close. I strongly urge you to order the delux. I spent two hours sitting out on the fire escape (the one on the end where the buses stop is best) in another section of the hotel so I could get view of the animals. I can not tell you how disappointed I was in the room. It really put my vacation off to a bad start. I guess I got spoiled in the other room and expected this one to be as good.

Can you specify the deluxe for the same price that's included in the land/sea? My reservation says "standard savannah view".

Do I need to call and request a specific area (other than not overlooking the people pen)?

We stayed at the AKL for our WDW trip (not land/sea) in July 2003, and had a "standard" savannah view booked. One of my requests I faxed to the hotel before arrival was a room with a view of Arusha rock. I had also requested a room with bunk beds for our 2 kids. When we checked in, they had us upgraded to a deluxe room, but one with 2 queen beds. When I inquired about other room availability, they showed me two other rooms with bunks, but they had poor views in my opinion. We stuck with the deluxe room - the view was amazing. My advice is to fax a request to the hotel directly requesting what you want. They do their best to honor your requests, but be sure to rank them in order of importance to you - sometimes they can't meet all your requirements (as in our case), and so you should think about which is most important. In our case, the view of Arusha rock was well worth not getting our bedding preference.

Good luck!

Just an FYI on room requests. WDW no longer accepts faxes for requests, and they have never accepted phone calls. The best thing to do is to make sure you request what you want on your reservation. If being in a deluxe room with a view of the Arusha Savanah is what you want, then it is best to pay the extra charge for the deluxe room and then request to view. While WDW does their utmost to give everyone what they want, it is not always possible. There are also many public viewing areas in the lodge, so all areas are viewable.

The large pen-type area was right under my window. I was excited to see it as I thought it was for the animals...WRONG...Those high-walled pen-type areas are for use during an emergency...for evacuating the guests to. (so I was told)... It keeps the animals away from the guests...or the other way around.... The Kudu trail is up the hallway to the left of the check-in counter at the back of the lobby. Sounds like you've been there, done that.....If you want to see a map of the layout of AKL, check out www.dreamsunlimitedtravel.com/resorts/AKLodge
