AKL or CBR?

I'm taking the kids (2 and 4) for a quick WDW trip in December. We will spend most of our time at MK, with maybe quick visits to MGM or Epcot.

I'd love to stay at WL, but I can't get a room. My options seem to be AKL or CBR. I'd prefer AKL, but I'm afraid we'll spend all of our time on the bus, especially since we'll have to come back to the resort each day for nap time.

Any advice?

AKL is so far away and if time and the convenience of getting back to your room for naps and rest time is important (which with a 2 and 4 year old it should be and congrats to your for knowing that!!!) I would pick CBR. However, why not pick an EPCOT area hotel instead of either of these? Beach Club, Boardwalk, or even Swan/Dolphin would be so much more closer and have easier transportation modes. CBR is very centrally located in any case and that would be my pick. The kiddie pool is rather large as well and the kids might like to feed the ducks down behind the pool bar as well as enjoy the sand and playgrounds there.

I agree about your suggestions. Unfortunately, all the hotels seem to be booked the weekend I'm going (Dec. 7-10). My only options right now are AKL and CBR. I'm going to keep trying to get somewhere closer, but I want to have something lined up in case I can't.

We actually had a ressie at GF and we changed it to CBR so we could stay 3 more days!!!

We stayed at AKL when my DS's were almost 13 and 10 -- they loved seeing the animals, but our room was a longer walk from the pool and snack bar than either of our rooms at CBR have been from the pool and food court. Plus, my DS10 (who isn't a really picky eater) found most of the AKL food too different for his taste...

We have really enjoyed CBR a lot -- enough that we returned there a second time. None of the rooms are far from a bus stop, and most aren't too far from the food court at Old Port Royale. I think you'll love CBR -- feel free to check out my photos in the links below!

AKL would be perfect for your 2 & 4 year olds. Don't let a few extra minutes on a bus discourage you from picking AKL. IMO, that's a pretty silly ( i really wanna say stupid ) reason to pass up on AKL. We did it last year with two 2 year olds and will do it again in December with two 3 year olds. We almost never use the buses as we have a rental car (minivan), but did once as BIL/SIL/nephew stayed at a park longer than our DD. The bus ride was like 15-20 minutes. AKL has dedicated bus service and doesn't share with any other resorts (much like POP). Do AKL and you'll be glad you listened to my advice. Stay there, and you'll know exactly what i mean.

We stayed at AKL when my kids were the same age as yours, the first time we ever went to WDW. It was WONDERFUL. So far that is my favorite resort. That being said, CBR is my favorite moderate so far. I would definitely stay at AKL. With little kids, the zero entry pool is great. The whole atmosphere is just truly a memorable experience.

You can't miss with either one of these resorts. :thumbsup2

Having stayed at both in the last 2 years, my vote would be for AKL. Bus ride is not that noticeably longer IMO. Request a room near the lobby and the walk to everything is minimal.

We have never stayed at the AKL but have stayed at the CBR twice. We loved it both times.

The CBR is very centrally located so it never took long ot reach any Disney destination. I remember timing our ride to MGM Studios and it was just 11 minutes. That was from the time we boarded the bus, made our rounds around the CBR and pulled into the MGM Studios bus stop. The ride to the other parks was short as well. The buses ran very efficiently and we never waited long for a bus to arrive at the bus stop.

At the CBR each village has their own quiet pool and white sandy beach. The beaches have hammocks and beach chairs with some having small playgrounds.

Old Port Royale is where the food court/main pool/marina/store/restaurant
is located. The promenade around the lake is just 1.4 miles so, even if you were in a village at the furthest point, your walk to the OPR is just half of that. If you want, you can pay for a preferred room location and you'll be placed even closer to OPR.

The food court at the CBR has something for everyone. The grab n go station was our favorite. They had fresh made sandwiches, salads, yogurt, fresh fruit, boiled eggs and lots of bakery items. Other stations sell pizza, pasta, salad, burgers, hot dogs, chicken strips (kids' chicken nugget meals come in a sand pail they can keep and play with on the beach), roasted turkey, deli sandwiches, veggies, etc. At breakfast, you can find Mickey waffles (plain or with fruit toppings), assortment of breakfast meats, omelets, etc.

The store at the CBR has a large variety of items to choose from. One side sells pirate and tropical themed items and the other side sells the more traditional Disney merchandise such as t-shirts, hats, toys, etc.

Hope this helps in your decision making process! Lisa

We stayed at CBR in Aug/Sep and enjoyed our stay. However, we've booked AKL for our next stay. With dedicated buses and one stop (vs many at CBR) I doubt the bus time will be that much different.

There is a kiddie pool at CBR, but not sure the depth of the quiet pools will be OK for your little ones. At AKL the pool is zero entry so it'll be fine for them and there is a wading pool. Also the playground is right next to the main pool w/no sand to clean up after a visit to the playground...lol Also there are planned activities for children at AKL, not sure you'll find that at CBR. Though you can visit AKL for a meal and to see the animals your children will have the opportunity daily even if you opt for a std view room.

ANIMAL KINGDOM LODGE:
Magic Kingdom: 12 miles
Epcot: 8 miles
Disney MGM Studios: 6 miles
Animal Kingdom: 2 miles

CARIBBEAN BEACH:
Magic Kingdom: 6 miles
Epcot: 1 mile
Disney MGM Studios: 2 miles
Animal Kingdom: 6 miles

Just keep in mind that you could spend 5-10 mins travelling within CBR so the bus time could be very similar. For us I never felt any bus ride was too long. I was on vacation and I didn't have to drive so I was very, very content. The only challenge we had was going from MK to MGM. Monorail to TTC then bus to MGM took a long time.
