I know one of the cons of AKL is its distance from most of the parks. But, aren't the buses at AKL dedicated only to AKL? Given multiple stops by many of the other resort buses, does it really take that much longer? What's normal time from AKL to MK? Do the villas and the lodge share bus stops?

At AKL/AKV, both building (Kidani Village & Jambo House) have a bus stop. The order of stops depends on where the bus is going once it leaves AKL/AKV.
Theme Park buses: Kidani Village > Jambo House > Theme Park
Disney Springs buses: Jambo House > Kidani Village > Disney Springs

Last night, we boarded the bus from Magic Kingdom back to Jambo house at 11:55 p.m. and arrived at 12:18 after midnight. So, plan 20-25 minutes just for the bus, not counting waiting time.

We have found the AKV buses to be better than most, partly because of the reason you mention in that there are only two internal stops and no sharing with another resort, but also because we have found that incidences of delay are fewer than other resorts. Trip to AK is only about 8 minutes, other parks more in the 20 to 25 minute range once on the bus, with Studios taking somewhat longer during the day because the bus also stops at Blizzard Beach (the DD bus does the Typhoon Lagoon stop).

Does it do the reverse on the way back? We've stayed there but I forget!

Order is the same usually when returning not the reverse -- e.g., Kidani is the first stop when going to and returning from the parks. Out of the many dozens of bus rides I have taken at AKL, I experienced a couple times when returning from a park that, for no known reason, the bus stopped at Jambo first.

Bus stop order is based on where the bus is going to once it leaves AKL/AKV:
If returning from a theme park and the next destination is Disney Springs, it will stop at Jambo House first.
If returning from Disney Springs and the next destination is a Theme Park, it will stop at Kidani Village first.

I consider the direct buses at AKV to be a positive. IMO it evens out the longer distance vs multiple stops for other locations. No complaints from us on the location nor the bus service.

Stayed in May. It was further to everything other than AK. Never any major waits or crowding on the bus.

Bus from AKL is not bad. I once did a split stay at AKV and BLT. I found that with the exception of BLT to Magic kingdom, every other park was easier / shorter from AKV .
