Ok, so I haven't been to Disney World since 2000, but am getting very excited about a trip coming up next May.

One of the things we enjoyed and spent a lot of time looking at on that trip was in DAK in a tent in Dinoland. It was a HUGE tent and had dinosaur skeletons in it, as well as dino egg fossils and a saber toothed cat. Does anyone remember this? (I can't find any references to it anywhere.) I'd love to take my kids back there. Is it still there? What happened to it???? :confused3

If you have any info, please share! Thank you so much...my kids and I loved this exhibit!

I think you are referring to the Boneyard. To answer your question, it is still there.

I'm sorry to tell you that that lovely exhibit is long gone. I loved it too. I can't even bring myself to tell you what it was replaced with. I'll be eager to hear your thoughts about the changes when you return!

yes - I have been in that large tent and remember all the things you mentioned. I think the dinosaur fossil called "Sue" was there at the time. (Or a replica.... I forget.)

I saw this the 1st time we were at AK which was the first year they were open. I don't remember seeing it since though. I am not saying that it isn't there for sure but as I recall it close to where we exited the Dinosaur ride.

I have looked for it since but haven't found it.

Oh, I am so sorry it's gone, but glad to know that someone else remembers it fondly. We're a little weird here...we loved all the educational stuff at Epcot & DAK, and will miss that angle with the changes at WDW since our trip 7 years ago.

I'm afraid that wonderful tent turned into the new rides in DinoLand, which I haven't heard anything good about. My DD loves Mullholland Madness at DCA (she's apparently the only one on the planet who does), so I think she might like the coaster, but we'll see...

Thanks for the sharing the memory! :)

Thanks for letting me know I'm not crazy and didn't dream that up!

As I recall, they had some people cleaning parts of the real "Sue" fossil at DAK, getting her ready for her premier at the Field Museum in Chicago. And the whole body replica one they had was so cool to see, but I think I'm a little biased by her name!

It was across from Chester and Hester where Primeval Whirl is now located. It was not intended to be a permenant attraction, it was more like a cool space filler and a good exhibt while they were working on Sue (which was being done in a seperate building outsitde the exit a little to the right, on the path to Theater in the Wild). It was really cool though, interesting from the educational side of things.

I can't for the life of me remember what it was called (and I was on the opening crew...)

I think it was called the Dino Institute and it was themed to be the 'work tent' and sort of showplace for the Dino Institute 'workers' who were 'digging' at the site.

I really liked that tent! I thought it was really cool! I'm not surprised it didn't stay, but it was a really neat thing to walk through! :)

My family also saw that exhibit in 2000. It helped fuel my DS dinosaur obsession, which led to my Disname, & a house full of various dino toys, books, etc. :magnify:

P.S. What, no dino smiley? :)

No, the Dino Institute was the buidling name for Countdown to Extinction (Dinosaur) we had "clearance" badges that said Dino Institue on them as a part of that attraction.

I do remember having to take the tent down and dismantle everything inside when Hurricane Georges was approaching, then the storm turned and we got nothing so it was all for not. Would have been nice to see it become a permanent building, but it was not in the cards, so to speak.

Also, the original Sue is in Chicago, but they have a replica of her now as you enter into the courtyard outside of Dinosaur which is neat.

YEAH!!! With the help of a friend we remembered the name... It was the "Dinosaur Jubilee" Apparently the fossils were moved to the Orlando Science Center "Dino Digs" here is some info I found:

DinoDigs

As part of a long-standing commitment on the part of Walt Disney World Co. to the Orlando Science Center and its focus on making education fun, Disney's Animal Kingdom has donated an assortment of dinosaur fossils and replicas to Orlando Science Center. Guests have the opportunity to view the fossils as part of OSC's new permanent exhibit, DinoDigs: Mysteries Unearthed.

The fossil casts were featured previously at the Dinosaur Jubilee in DinoLand, U.S.A. at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Eight full dinosaurs and 12 other pieces are included in the donation. OSC will showcase the dinosaurs in their disparate land and aquatic settings, as they were featured at the Dinosaur Jubilee up until a few months ago. Guests will become part of a paleontological excavation site, where dinosaurs and other prehistoric land and sea animals are displayed and analyzed.

I
I found the name and was getting ready to post when I saw you mentioned it. I have the book The Making of Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park and the only thing they mentioned was the Dino Institute (with a description that sounded like the tent area).
If you do a google search including the words:
"Animal Kingdom" tent dino jubilee
you will find a site that has some pictures, but they are from the 're-do' of the tent in 2000. Before that it was more 'scientifically' themed and looked more like the students from the Dino Institute had set it up to educate the public. The re-do was more like Chester and Hester had taken items from the dig and set them up in a kind of tacky way.

It was indeed the Dino Jubilee:

Dinosaur Jubilee 4/98 - sometime in 2001, one of the sections was called the Fossil Preparation Lab. It is now extinct. :lmao:

It was removed to make way for Primeavil Whirl and Triceratops Spin.(3/02 -) :)

Yes, that was it exactly!!!! :yay: Right down to the mammoth and the saber toothed cat, it was great to see the pictures.

I'm glad to know that the exhibits went somewhere that they can still be seen. Maybe I'll take my kids over to that museum, just to do it all again.

Thank you sooooooo much!

This was one of my favorite exhibits as well. If you watch the Disney Sing Along video, they have a couple of shots in there, including the Sue replica. Actually I THINK they now have Sue outside, though it could be Stan (another T-Rex that's on display herein South Dakota, but I have heard may also be the AK replica on display).

It was Sue last Spring (DH kids me about my 'replica' being up in the park each year).
