AirTran or Allegiant Air - anyone ever have to cancel/postpone flights?

I've been planning our December trip since January and was just getting ready to book our flights on either Allegiant Air or AirTran. Then a few weeks ago, my mom was dianosed with cancer and it doesn't look too good. I'm not sure what her condition will be in December; she's not too bad right now but who knows how she will be in December. I'm torn between continuing to plan the trip and book our flights, or postponing it. Does anyone have experience with either of these airlines (or any other) and having to postpone or cancel a flight? Do they give consideration to the situation (sickness) and let you reschedule? I did talk to someone from Allegiant and she said there'd be a $50 per person cancellation penalty but I could get a credit. I talked to a second person at Allegiant and she said it'd be up to a manager, in my case. Anyone have any actual experience? Thanks

 to you and prayers for your Mom. I don't have any experience with these airlines, but hopefully another DISer will see this and offer some help. Good luck!!!
