I found a rate through Dollar for $119 for the entire week of our stay. Needless to say, I was ecstatic. I made the reservation and after all of the taxes and such were added the final price was $160. What a rip!

I still feel like we got a great FLAT rate, but I was a little surprised about the added taxes.

This is quite typical for rental car companies throughout the U.S. In most places they are allowed to recoup fees and expenses from renters. In some places there is a charge for the rental car shuttle service, location fees, license fees, airport fees and taxes, taxes, taxes. In the past few years these have started to pile up as rental car companies look to subsidize their loss in profits from declining rentals. In your case, $40 is fairly inexpensive as a lot of the fees are based on your rate. I've had 4-day rentals in some cities run well over $250.
