I am considering taking one on my next trip for the flight. I am guessing they require you to take these out and put them in a separate bin as you would a laptop. Can somebody confirm?
I just recently took one to Arizona and was told at one airport to go ahead and leave it in the case and at 2 others to take it out and put it in same bin as the case. It was really easy and not much hassle.

Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking it would be best to just take it out and not ask. That way, they can see it and it is obvious I am not hiding anything.
I do believe that you will have to take the DVD player out of your carry-on at the security checkpoint and place it in a bin by itself to send through the x-ray machine. Once on the plane you can only have it on at a certain altitude; the flight attendants will make an announcement when electronics can be turned on, and another when they must be turned off.
Also, as a courtesy to the other passengers, please bring headphones to be used with the DVD player.
Portable DVD players technically should not have to be taken out of your bags for screening, but in real life TSA screeners frequently act as if it is required. There's really no point in debating it once you're there, so you have two options. 1) Leave it in your bag (as technically and according to the blog you should) or 2) Take it out (as you regularly will be required to do after the fact by screeners who haven't read the blog).

DW had similar experience with a Kindle . . . about 50-50 on removal. When handed a printout of the blog page responses from the "shirts" ranged from "that's old," "that doesn't apply here," to "where did you get that." All of those led to removing the Kindle from bag.
We just returned form MCO last week and we were required to take it out. We had no problem on our flight into MCO. When coming home it was in a backpack and the TSA screener pulled the bag aside and asked us if we had liquids. We said no and he said "Well, something is triggering it." Turns out it was the DVD player. The screener said it usually doesn't "trigger it" but it did that time. Next time I'll just put it in a bin and save the trouble.
Our bag went through the normal xray machine on the conveyer belt. Maybe there's something in my particular DVD player that appears as liquid on the xray, indicating a need for secondary inspection? Anyway, he said that DVD player shouldn't normally need to be removed, but it was in our case.
