American, Delta, and United are cutting flights to/from Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia.

Yes, "temporarily", but over the summer travel season and I'm sure it could become permanent.

This is in addition to airlines (Delta, American, United) announcing they're cutting out service to various cities. (Google for specifics)

Flying is about to get more expensive.

I'm not sure about that tbh. The only reason they're doing it is because of the air traffic controller shortage. The FAA is concerned about ground delays if airlines keep their regular schedules and are looking to nip it in the bud so we don't get a repeat of last summer's chaos.

Airlines cutting routes is a separate issue.

And if the FAA can't fill their ATC shortage? I'm not saying it will definitely be permanent, just that I won't be surprised if it becomes so.

Definitely. Thought people might be interested in that though.

Frankly, if they can’t fill more air traffic controller positions, then flights need to be cut until they do. You can’t keep putting on more flights then the system can handle. And air traffic controllers are a critical part of the system. The whole system hasn’t kept up with demand. If they‘re not proactive & cut flights now, how many people are gonna be screaming & demanding action when there’s a repeat of last year? Or God forbid, a disaster happens because of overworked controllers or overwhelmed systems. At least if flights are cut now, people have time to change plans instead of being stuck somewhere for days.

Number I heard is that NY ATC is running at 54% authorized staffing. It's about 80% systemwide. It's been stated that part of the NY ATC area is going to be given to Philly for the summer because of how shortstaffed NY is.
