Airline prices: I know the predictions, but...

We are flying one way to Vegas in June, then one way back from Salt Lake City. We live in Indy. The cheapest flights I can find right now are around $280 per person total (hence over $1100). I am watching oil prices/airline prices. Any opinions on whether or not we should just bite the bullet now??? Or would you watch for deals over the next 2 months, if this was you? I see that some airlines are having deals through the end of May, but nothing so far for June. Waiting is always a gamble :confused3 Ideas?

You might want to contact the airline and ask them about an "open jaw" ticket.

We are flying from Madison, Milwaukee or Chicago (whichever we can find cheapest) to South Texas in June for my brothers graduation...2 of us, and the cheapest I can find roundtrip is around $700 for both of us! Arg! Any tips or advice would be appreciated!

What the heck is that CF? Never heard of it but I'm intrigued!

Open Jaw is when you fly into one city, but out of another.

In this example, it the OP would get a ticket that went home-LAS/SLC-home. The OP gets themselves between LAS and SLC.

For non-International travel, I rarely find this cheaper than two one-ways (since most airline no longer punish you for buying two one-ways rather than a round trip ticket), but it is worth checking into.

It is very helpful, however when flying internationally. For example, my home-Hanoi/Saigon-home ticket was pretty much the same price as round trip to either city, whereas two one-ways would have been 6-7 times the price.

sorry i keep reading your post. What ticket are you looking to lower? I just can't seem to figure out where you are flying to adn from? Vegas to SLC?

We're flying out of Indy - into Vegas. Then a week later, we are flying from Salt Lake City back to Indy. Long story....me and my big traveling ideas;) We have already set ourselves up to get from Vegas to Salt Lake City.

The prices just went a few dollars higher in the last few days. I am seriously thinking of opening up a Southwest airlines credit card, and paying the $59 annual fee in order to get the points towards out flights. :confused3

Thanks for the help, so far.

My niece just flew home from grad school at Univ of Utah American or United (I cannot remember which) from Salt Lake to Cleveland for $160 for Christmas break. She bought her tix about 30-40 days out and stayed home for about 2.5 weeks. She usually flies SW from SLC with a connection in Vegas and I don't think we've ever paid more than $200 for tix.

mommapea, I have been watching airline prices since I will be flying out to San Diego to see my son before he deploys again and I can't believe how much higher they are then when I went over Thanksgiving. I almost always fly SW because I love that I can get a credit if the prices go down, plus I don't like paying for bags. With them the prices for one way are no different then round trip, in my experience. I live in Indy also and a friend just booked flights to LV for later this month and we were both shocked at how much she had to pay so I am not sure there are going to be a lot of bargains out there.

Keep checking the fares, that way you will know if you are getting a good deal or not. they always seem to fluctuate. Just don't wait too long beacause then all the lowest fares will be sold out. If you are flexible in your travel dates that can help too.

Have you gone on different travel web sites to compare prices?

I read where the gas prices are going up by summer and with that so will the airfare. I bought our tickets for the end of May, now we need to hope we will have no more than our 5 allotted snow days or school will not be out in time.
