airfare is out of control

I'm trying to get Pittsburgh to Orlando or Tampa in December, the lowest I can get is $540/pp. It really is out of control.

I was a fool and didn't book before - now it is up $50 to $120 depending on which flight out I take. $272 and up Mpls to Orlando. (7/17 & 7/31). A couple of days this week it dropped by $5 to $267 but then a few hours later went up again.

I doubt you are going to see really great deals on flights. The airlines have cut the number of planes flying so each flight is more crowded. If you see what you think is a deal grab it. They have gone to smaller planes on some routes, also cut the number of flights.

The airlines have gotten "smarter" about managing their seats.

The flights I wanted just before and then just after THanksgiving on Song went from $224 to $244 to $300, all in 1 week. Thank heaven I changed to traveling on Thanksgiving and staying until the 1st. Paid $220 (with vouchers) and now its up to $240. I think I'd rather pay a little more now than play the waiting game to see if the rates drop.

Some of you guys are really lucky.

We don't fly from Alaska (thank God!), but airfare out of Minneapolis-St. Paul has never been good. There isn't a lot of competition up here for Northwest - and we almost always pay $250 per person - after we watch flights. That's what I've expected to pay (I jump on anything $250 or below) for the past several years.

I know several Minnesota Dis'ers have had better luck, but few people have flown for much less than $200.
