I have always used SW to fly to Orlando and have been allowed to board early with my two grandkids.

I am going to Philadelphia, but was assigned to Air Tran. How does Air Tran assign seats for handicapped persons. I read that if I don't pay $10 I will get a complimentary seat when I check in. Do my two companions get to sit with me?

Also, I want an aisle seat so I can extend my leg if it starts to give me problems. Do they take requests at the 24 hr check in or do I have to wait until I get to the airport?

I am not sure of Air Tran's procedure of pre boarding with younger children. Their site does have this information for boarding of passengers with disabilities
Boarding Assistance

If you would like pre-boarding assistance on your AirTran Airways flights due to a disability, please advise the AirTran Airways agent. The agent will help you pre-board, allowing you to be seated prior to general boarding.

I would call them and talk to them about it. If you wait until 24 hour check-in, it's possible they will not have a seat to meet your needs. They also may not have seats together. Pre-boarding does not help you with seat selection with AirTran because all seats are assigned, it's not open seating.

How were you "assigned" to AirTran? You must have chosen that airline.

Being able to preboard won't help with seat selection on an airline with assigned seats. I suggest that you read AirTran's policy for disabled passengers:
