I have decided to fly air tran from detroit to orlando. The price can't be beat. However, I have noticed that when choosing my flight the cheapest tickets say you can't choose a seat until you check in. We are traveling as a family. Will we have a problem getting seats together? How early will we need to check in to get a good seat. Is it worth an extra $70 to know my child will be safely seated beside me?

We flew Air Tran in December. If you book online you can pick your seats online 24 hours before departure. Unfortunately, our tickets were part of a package through AAA and we were issued paper tickets. This meant that we could not use the internet and had to check in at the airport. My daughter and I got the last two seats in the back of the plane. There was no window and the noise was incredible. But, we were close to the lavatory! Did I say we checked in 3 hours before departure?! Needless to say, I upgraded our seats to business class for $50 each on the way back.
I learned my lesson and will always buy my airline tickets online from now on!

We always get our tickets online and check in online 24 hours prior. We've always gotten seats together in the middle of the plane.

You shouldn't have a problem....especially if you check in 24 hours in advance. And their desk agents are great....if by chance you wouldn't be able to get seats together they will try to move other passengers around to accomodate you (we have seen this a few times). I would save the money and don't worry about it....Airtran is great!
