Age of an 'Adult' in US Hotels?

Can anyone help me with regards at what age US laws/hotels deem someone to be an 'adult' when it comes to staying in a hotel room?

I want to book the HRH for next October, not sure whether we'll need 2 or 3 rooms but that decision rests on the age of an 'adult'. There will be me and Pete (both proper adults!!) 4 kids between 9 and 13(1 girl 3 boys) plus his daughter of 16. Will she be able to be in a room with my daughter?

I'm running through all the different room configurations in my head and it's a logistical nightmare!!

My three children always stayed in their own room, long before they were anywhere near becoming adults. In fact the eldest was 11 the first time. We always had adjacent rooms and sometime connecting. You should have no trouble. I think the problem is if you put 1 child in a room on their own, then they have to be an adult.

Ok, here is what "officially" you will have to do as Florida law means that there has to be 1 person 16 or over in each room.

If you have three rooms Pete, Pete's daughter and you would be in each room (in reality you wouldn't but they don't need to know) and you can always get adjoining rooms so you are next to the younger ones.

When we went with Becky (when she was 14), I officially had my own room, in reality Becky was in the adjoining room on her own.

Yes, this is exactly what we have done in the past. Say we need 2 rooms, one for Matt and me and one for the 'kids', then I book one room in my name and one in Matt's with the kids allocated between them (doesn't really matter how). Once you get there, you do what you like.
