Over a half century ago, my family lived in the LA area. My Dad loved DisneyLand, so we went a few times a year. I remember It's a Small World outside on cement risers with non-animatronic dolls. I loved to ride the buckets from one side of the park to the other. We used to see Walt Disney driving around in replica cars.
Shortly before WDW opened, I moved to Florida. I spent the 1970s visiting the MK with high school and college friends. We'd pull off the interstate in the middle of nowhere. The drive to the MK seemed to take forever through more nothingness. Then the parking gates would appear and the magic would start.
I went a couple of times in the 1980s and visited the "new" park, Epcot. But life was busy and there were other priorities. Plus my DH does not share my love of Disney.
In the fall of 2011, my DIL (who adores Disney) told me she was ready to take the grandkids (2, 4 & 5) to visit the MK on their next trip to FL. So my husband and I gifted my stepson, his wife and 3 kids two nights at the Contemporary and a day of theme park admission. DH & I stayed at the AKL and joined them on the coldest day in January 2012 at the MK. There are some different rides but mostly there was a sense of timelessness. It was like stepping back into my early childhood. As I rode Dumbo with my middle grandchild, it took me back to Dumbo flights at Disneyland
Anyway, I thought our day in January was a one-off. But in May my stepson and DIL asked if we'd like the grandkids for a couple of weeks on our own. I've been busy researching a last minute trip at the end of June. My stepson will join us for one evening at the MK but he'll be in Orlando on business. So mostly it'll be Grandad and I with three preschoolers! Now you know I'm not only long-winded but crazy, too
I thought I should de-lurk because when we bought our passes, I bought myself a Florida annual pass. I'm retired now and just a short two-hour drive from WDW. My DIL frequently has business trips to Florida, so she and I are thinking about spur of the moment girls trips to WDW -- just don't tell our Disney disliking husbands
