......I finally got to "hear" Garrett (my rugrat with Down Syndrome) tell me I Love You. Actually, it was signed, but it was Great!!! For the first time,
Garrett signed I Love You to me on his own, without me saying it
first or anything like that!! I tucked him in, and said "Good Night"
and kissed him, and before I could say anything else, he signed I
Love You to me!! I know, sounds stupid, probably, but I have waited 9
1/2 years to "hear" it from him, not coached or prompted or anything,
so it was great to me!! On Mother's Day, he signed it, but it was
more because I was asking him about a pin that he gave me that was
signing I Love You. THis was purely on his own! Okay, I'll quit
babbling now! :-)

That is neat!
it always means a lot more when it is their idea to say something nice to you.:) :) :)
Here's hoping for a lot more "I love yous".

That is wonderful. I waited 3 years to hear MAMA , So I understand how much it means. Hear to many more"I love you's":)

It doesn't matter that it was signed or oral. He said I love you. Wonderful. I know you are flying high. It gives me chills.

I waited three years to hear my son call me mama so I know the feeling. How wonderful for you and your son. Thanks for sharing your news.

Sure did bring a smile to face :) (O.K. and a couple of tears too)!

Reading something so incredibly wonderful and happy has made my day! I'm glad wonderful things still happen to good people.

When we have to wait for something, we appreciate it more. It's almost like the anticipation is part of the gift!

As an OT I worked with a non-vrbal physically involved girl. The speech therapist and I were trying her out with her first aug. comm. device. We were telling her what to activate as we tried a head pointer and a light switch.

Her mom came to see the machine and without anyone of us showing her she picked mom and love off of the numerous icons! We hadn't practiced either one! We all had tears in our eyes!

Even though the kids respond when mom is there and you know they love you ----
it is wonderful to hear them initiate!
For those kids who can't say it yet -- I see the sparkle in their eyes when their moms arrive at school and their responses change! Moms are special whether they say it or not!

I remember the first time my DD used her Dynavox to tell me "I love you". It was so wonderful. It meant so much just knowing that she picked out that message to say (also without someone telling her which one it was).

Kristy, this is so sweet--it really brought tears to my eyes. May you have many more milestones!!!
