Anyone been on safari? Which country did you visit and what tour operator, if any, did you use? My top two priorities are safety and comfort. Not looking to pitch my own tent.
Check out the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forum website. They have a very active Africa discussion board and can give lots of recommendations based on personal experience.
My coworker went on a safari with her boyfriend last year - they had an awesome time, and even went on a hot air balloon ride. I can ask her which tour group she used. She was very pleased with her vacation.
I've been on three safaris(I was a travel agent specializing in safari). Tanzania is excellent, South Africa is too. I loved Botswana. We also loved Zimbabwe but I think it's getting kinda "hot" politically right now. Kenya was really good too. Abercrombie and Kent is top of the line. Africa Travel has great contacts. Micato is also excellent and considered right up there with A&K. You should talk to a travel agent with current experience. Make sure you are going when the animals are most visable(dry season) and be sure to invest plenty of time because this is a once in a lifetime trip-no scrimping.
I'll agree with Shortbun, I've safariied a lot, South Africa is amazing, and also gives a lot of other sightseeing and shopping opportunities if you don't want to be in the reserves all the time, some excellent private reserves are: Ulusaba, Hippo Hollow, Sabi sands.
For Kenya you have to go to The Governers or Treetops.
agree, go in dry season and take lots of woolies, its VERY cold at 5 or 6 am when you start out.
