The safari plan changed a little from the original plan back a year ago when we booked, as the other three locations we were booked with were part of a group called Delta & Desert Safaris. But the camp in the Savuti region was going through renovations, so they shifted us to a different camp. Ghoha Hills was a very nice camp, just a different overall vibe from the other ones. And a long ride from the airstrip. We had an early flight in here, so we got to the camp mid morning and had a lot of time to kill. Got a little sun by the small pool they had, got some lunch and headed out for an afternoon drive. Highlight from the afternoon included seeing a roan antelope, which apparently is one of the top 10 endangered animals. Also, we found a pride of lions along with a cub napping and resting in some shade. We were able to drive right up to a couple feet of where they were all laying. One couple from Germany and the other dinner companions were a younger couple from London on their honeymoon.

The next day was something a little different, they arranged a full day game drive, which allowed us to get farther into the reserve and had a lunch out under a tree on the drive. Even that was fancier than I would have imagined. I figured a sandwich and some chips, but it was a full salad, entree and dessert on real plates and silverware. Pretty cool. The big highlight of the game drive was finding a pack of wild dogs, again listed on the top of globally endangered species.

We were also reminded of the reality that this wasn’t Animal Kingdom’s safari when we ended up with a flat tire, which despite the challenges of being in a really deep sand, our guide changed out in less than 30 minutes.

Another early morning flight out meant no morning game drive the next day again, but a later breakfast meant a little sleeping in the next day. Off to Chobe to finish our safari.
