Affordability

Ok, I know some of you think if I have to ask, I shouldn't even be thinking about it, but I really want to go on one of these tours (China would be wonderful) but I just do not see how to afford it. There are 4 of us, me, my DH, and 2 DS's ages 9 and 5.
We make pretty decent $$, not well to do by any means, but it seems like so many people are going on these trips. So, can any of you tell me good ways you plan for the cost of these trips? I mean, we can afford a week in cancun or Jamaica, and a week in Disney (on DVC) but not sure I can swing this, even with recycling my cans, LOL.
Another thing, what age is a good age for these trips for kids?

Well, we're not doing any other trips this year, so that we can do this one. We usually do 2 WDW trips, at around 3K each, and then a couple of other smallish trips, which add up.

Also, I've stopped getting a cart when I go into Target - thus preventing every run for detergent turning into a $200 extravaganza

When you add up all the $ you spend on all your trips in a given year, you'd probably be surprised at what's really in your travel budget. Good luck!

Since this trip will be about $4000 per person (with the ABD's cost and extras) I would work out how much I would need to save to book this in 24 months, then I would set up a Vacations Savings account for the first 12 months, set my payroll to direct deposit the needed amount in the account, then after 12 months, book the trip and Disney allows you to pay on this also at least when set up with a Travel Agent. Another option is to take out a personal loan for it, set the loan to pay off in 24months, and get your Adventures by Disney fix early.

Stop over at the budget board forum. You'll be surprised what you can do.

Also, look for special Disney or TAs may be running. It certainly isn't going to finance the trip but it is nice for the extras.

We did the early booking and bought through Costco which was offering a gift card rebate from $200-500 depending on how much was spent.

This is a fabulous idea! I probably spend $500+ a month in Target and most of the time I just need some detergent or diet coke. Thanks for this tid bit, I will put it to practice tomorrow. (we will see if it will work since Target shopping is a true addiction )

I think your boys are still young enough that you have plenty of time to save and plan, would think 8 years old would be the about the youngest to appreciate an adventure of this kind. In addition to saving and planning, I think you also have to make the decison to go, don't think there will ever be a time I'll say we have enough money. I don't know how we are going to redo the kitchen and go to Italy, but I'm doing it!
