Are you for or against affirmative action? We talked about this in my class today so I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are.

I like the ideals behind it but don't think it's right to actually have it in place.

i love me some affirmative action.

i'm a female minority. so i would benefit.

and, contrary to popular belief, it will rarely if ever HURT you if you're not a minority. the only time that happens is in high tension college acceptances and in the job market.

it is incredibly rare that 2 equally qualified people will apply and the distinction comes down to sex or race to decide. usually there are other mitigating circumstances that will make the decision.

What is it?

Where somebody takes race, gender, and ethnicity into account so that there will be equal opportunity.

I dont really care. I'm going to have a hard time getting into med school because I'm white and because I have a guys name. White males make up the largest percentage of med school students, and they try to even it out with females and other races. So I dont know how that will affect me.

I think people should be considered for something only be their qualifications.

I personally think it's taking a step back by further dwelling on someone's ascribed status. Everyone should be created equal, meaning that their ages/race/sex should not be a factor.

Won't you have an option to tick off a box for "female" so if you have a unisex name they will see you are a girl?

the only time it comes in to play is if 2 equally qualified in every other way people apply, and the minority of the two in accordance to the majority of the organization (like if you're going to University of Memphis as a white female, you would be the minority. since its a predominantly black school) you will be put ahead of the majority you were competing against. it is to keep things as racially and genderly equally as possible.

i've filled out more college and scholarship applications than i care to remember, and every single one asked for sex. they don't care waht your name is. they look at that "sex" box to see what it says.

What I don't like is that African Americans, Asians, minorities etc. get more scholarships and other financial help than others. So if I get a 3.5 and another student has a 2.8, they should get the scholarship cause they aren't right? That doesn't make sense.

There was an entire field trip to a state college for all of the Asian students in my school...

Idk if that's affirmative action or not, but it's something that should be changed.

Well, those are scholarships from particular groups. They can give out scholarships for midgets, having blue eyes...someone from my school got offered a free ride to a school because his last name is the same as the name of the university, like Henderson University (not really the name just an example).

scholarships are usually created by private individuals. and if i'm going to pay for you to go to school, i'll pay for whoever i want to go to school. if i want someone with blue eyes brown hair and a left hand to go to school, adn i've got the moeny to pay for it, you can't very well tell me not to.
