We (DH, me, DD14, DS8 and DD3) fly down this coming Thursday. DD3 has a condition that causes her to lack normal muscle tone. She can walk unassisted. She can stand unassisted. She tires very easily.

We are staying off-site and will have our jogging (not) stroller.

I would appreciate advice on whether to request DAS or the stroller thingy. Can we get both and use our own judgment on what to use when?

TIA!

For a stamina issue, a stroller-as-wheelchair is the accommodation; stamina issues don't qualify for the DAS. Most queues are mainstreamed, and the stroller tag will allow you to use the stroller in lines.

Enjoy your vacation!

Yes a stroller as a wheel chair tag is what Disney will offer you. Since your daughter had a stamina problem that is what she will need. It is still very hot in Florida even with the cold front that just came through so a fan and a cooling towl may help her some also staying out of the sun

the stroller is your friend!! Our now 10 yr old used a stroller for many years, due to hypotonia. It also helped with issues relating to autism, like crowds, noise etc.

Another hypotonia mama here. Our son is a large 8 year old, and we still use a stroller at Disney. I agree with others that the stroller is helpful not just for actual stamina, but emotional stamina too. The shade and ability to pull the cover down and hide from the world was so important!

Just to clarify stamina issue related to a qualifying ADA disability must me accommodated. Most of the time a wheelchair of stroller as a wheelchair can be that accommodation, but it that does not work then yes another accommodation may be required such as a DAS.

What does waiting in an alternative place do to help stamina?

With the range and combinations of disabilities it is not possible to guess what works for every person. I could certainly see a situation where a person could both not sit as long as the line and ride length, but also needed to walk/be active during that time (for any number of reasons).

Certainly the exception, but conceivably a the DAS accommodation might better allow as close as possible to have an equivalent experience as compared with a non disable person.

Just pointing out that there are exceptions to most blanket statements

If they need to walk/be active while they're waiting, then it isn't a stamina issue. I can't think of a single situation, when stamina is the only problem, as in the OP, that a DAS would be appropriate.

the only thing the OP has said is that her daughter has low muscle tone and if that is the case ( and there are a number of different reason why a child could have low muscle tone and that is there only disability) then a stroller as a wheel chair rage would accommodate the child's needs even if the child needs to stand walk some as most lines you stop for a bit. If the OP is given just the stroller as the wheel chair tag and finds it dose not meet their childs need then I would incurage them to go back to GR and say this is not meeting my needs because of XYZ is there something that can help us with XYZ, but disney response for stanama issue has been the stroller as a wheel chair tag.

Just to clarify stamina issue related to a qualifying ADA disability must me accommodated. Most of the time a wheelchair of stroller as a wheelchair can be that accommodation, but it that does not work then yes another accommodation may be required such as a DAS.

The first accommodation offered by WDW for stamina is to use a mobility device. If the guest tries that and finds it does not meet his/her needs, absolutely they are welcome to return to Guest Relations to discuss the specific challenge(s) encountered and see what might be arranged.

Stroller as wheelchair IS one type of accommodation. It is separate from DAS.
The majority of children with mobility or stamina issues need ONLY the stroller as wheelchair tag that allows them to have their stroller used in lines/attractions and treated like a wheelchair.

Guests using actual wheelchairs, ECVs or other mobility devices don't need anything to allow use of those in lines.
A guest using a wheelchair, ECV or stroller as wheelchair could choose to sit in it for the time in line or could get up and stand or walk if they need to. They could also choose to park it for some attractions to walk in line.

Some people have needs that are not met just by having the mobility device with them in lines/attractions.
As others already mentioned, DAS is a separate program and the guest would need to go back to Guest Relations and explain what additional needs they have. Guests also need to understand that not all needs can be met (and the ADA does not require every need To be met).

just to add - nor does the ADA require the person's preferred accommodation be available to them, just an appropriate accommodation.

another hypotonia mom here! going on our first trip in march and looking into stroller-as-a-wheelchair to help my 5 year old. if we bring our double stroller for dd too can we still get the tag? or does it need to be a single stroller that only dd uses?

as long as it is not wider than 30'inches and not longer than 48 inches, it will fit into lines.
People have even gotten the WDW park rental double strollers tagged a 'stroller as wheelchair'

Get the stroller as wheelchair tag, and please do not for a second feel bad about it.
I was afraid to ask when my son needed it and we ended up having to keep setting him down to lie in the ground because we couldn't carry him constantly. You don't want to have to do that.

You can have a stroller as wheelchair tag even if your child walks some of the time, which walking might be beneficial to build muscle tone (get a doctor's advice).

If you have any questions about whether you need more than a stroller as wheelchair tag, you could imagine/envision in advance what difficulties you think/perceive you would run into for which the stroller as wheelchair tag would not suffice.

While the (discontinued) Guest Assistance Card had a variety of functions, the DAS has only one function, the equivalent of being able to repeatedly leave the ride line and return to where you left off (that's not exactly how the DAS works).

Autism, sensory overload, and claustrophobia are issues/topics completely separate from / unrelated to muscle tone and stamina even though they may be brought up at the same time when discussing needed/desired special accommodations at Guest Relations (preferably using plain English, not medicalese, and preferably not using the first, second, third, or fifth words of this paragraph).

To avoid confusing people, that's not at all how it works. There are threads at the top of this board with more details about how DAS works at WDW and at Dl, but here's the quick version.....

The accommodation of DAS is that it allows the guest to wait somewhere other than in the regular line.
Someone in the group goes to the desired attraction and gets a DAS Return Time that is roughly 10 minutes less than the current time other guests are waiting in line. After the Return Time has arrived, the group comes back to the attraction and gets into the Fastpass Return line. At that point, if they need to leave the line, they would be treated like other guests in the Fastpass line who need to leave. If they talk to the CM before getting out of line, the CM may be able to do something to allow them to return or they may not be able to return without waiting (or getting a new DAS or Fastpass time).
