Advice on possibly flying to companies on the same trip

Due to not wanting to make my son miss school, I am wanting to fly to WDW with Allegiant (the flight leaves at 6:20 pm). Although, I like Airtran and being able to check-in for the flight back home at the hotel.

Has anyone ever bought one-way tickets and flown two different companies? Are their any Cons to do this? There is no price difference.

I am doing it this trip. I can't say for sure that I have done it but I know I have booked tickets for my mom this way and she hasn't complained (which is a miracle in itself). Since nowadays they don't pentalize you for one way tickets (via price like they used to). I see NO cons. I am sure there are some but I just don't know what they would be...

We are also considering doing this for our fall trip we love the travel times and like you we can check bags at resort with airtran. We have never done this

We just did this last week for your very same reasons. Airtran left at 4pm so the kids would have had to miss a half day of school. So I went down on Allegiant which didn't leave until later in the evening, then booked Airtran back home. No cons at all!

How did you do with the seat assignments? Did you pre select or wait to the 24 hour mark?

I'm too cheap to pay for seat assignments! My kids are 9 & 12 so it's not a huge issue for us if we're not seated together, so I wasn't really worried about it. For the Allegiant flight down, we checked-in at the airport 2 hours ahead of time. That's when Allegiant assigns seats if you haven't paid for them. They do not allow you to choose seats at 24-hour online check-in like many other airlines do. In fact, with Allegiant, you can't even use 24-hour online check-in at all if you haven't paid for seats. You have to go to the counter & check in at the airport. There was no problem seating the 3 of us together. For the trip home on Airtran, I came across $30 in coupon codes that I used to pay for seat assignments ahead of time, so we did have confirmed seats on that flight, and for free!

Yes, people do this all the time. No cons to unless you like a particular airline.

We did it. Flew SWA on credits to MCO, and flew home on Continental from TPA. It was the best bargain for us.

Thanks TaraPA very helpful. We have never flown either airline and with my kids older than yours sitting together is not a problem either
