We will be in Cozumel in April on the Fantasy and are planning to do a dolphin swim at Chankanaab. The cost through DCL is 152/person. Booking through Dolphin Discovery (good reviews from what I can tell) is less than 1/2 price. Other benefits- We can get into Chankanaab earlier which is something we wanted to do so we have a lot of time to explore the place. It includes lunch, which isn’t that important but will save some money. Only thing that worries me is that if the ship doesn’t dock for some reason you don’t get a full refund- you get a credit to use in the future. How risky is this? How often is it difficult to dock in Cozumel, particularly at that time of year? I seem to read more about difficulty at CC but haven’t heard much about Cozumel.

There's always risk when booking excursions independently. Did you purchase travel insurance through a third-party (not DCL)? If so, I would look at your policy to see if it would cover the missed excursion if something goes awry and make sure you included the cost of the excursion in your insurance premium.
