My five year old son is interested in collecting and trading pins. Over the last few months I've been reading up on it a bit, but I would appreciate any tips in getting him started.

I thought I'd buy him a couple of starter kits for his 6th birthday which we'll be spending at WDW. My concern is that he'll be trading his pins with CMs who apparently have a lot of immitation pins because of other people trading them. I don't want to ruin my son's fun by checking the pins he trades for (like I could even tell!) But I also don't want to buy expensive pins and have them traded for junk. Should I just suck it up? Any suggestions?

I would check out the http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2213419 thread and buy pins from the green sellers. Good sellers for trading pins are sleepys_emporium, gitoman, and mubunny, just to name a few. These pins are much cheaper than in the parks, and we have found that the green sellers sell a majority of good pins. You are always going to have junk pins because so many people buy them and put them on the CM lanyards.

You are going to get junk when he trades, but I wouldn't worry about it. Think about the fun you had trading for that pin, not about it's quality.

I just ask that you don't trade Junk for Junk because that just contributes to the problem.

Thanks! I wouldn't knowingly buy scrappers for him to trade. I just want to figure out how not to be disappointed if he trades for scrappers. I guess buying real pins at a discounted rate would help.

Something else that I learned when I started last year, go with what you like. Since there are thousands of pins, collecting all of them is almost impossible, so the best thing I was told, pick something you like and stick with that theme, and then the occasional one that might catch your eye. An example is, between my fiance and I, we do Scrooge McDuck, Sorceror Mickey, Star Wars themed Disney ones, Christmas Pins, and pins of resorts we stay at. We buy others solely to trade.

Definitely go with what you like. We have 4 trader/collectors. We all collect something different for different reasons and sometimes you just see "the" pin and you want it. :) Also visit the link MtNittany posted for some good sellers on eBay, that's always a good thing to know. :)
