Advice for Flying/Car Renting Amateur - Help!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are planning to travel to Vegas next year and then travel around to see the various national parks.
It seems it may be inconvenient to fly in and our of Vegas. For instance, if we fly in to Vegas it may be a hassle to have to drive back there to fly out since we may be in Utah or Arizona.
Is it a huge hassle to fly into one airport and back out of another? We are driving people and I'm the only one of us who has flown and that was on company business. However, I don't want to drive from South Carolina to Nevada, Utah and Arizona. I think we should fly and then rent a car. Also, we've never rented a car. Can you just rent it one place and turn it in at another place? I think you can, but I've never done it before.
Any advice for a flying/car rentng novice.

It's really not a hassle to fly into one airport and out of another. You may not get a great fare but it's doable. Also renting one place and dropping off at another is no big deal either, again you may pay a little more. You just have to make sure that whichever car rental company you use you can do this.

Do some airfare searching on Orbitz. You will need to use their advance search features. It will allow you to do something other than a round trip. Also the car rental sites will allow you to search and price what you need.

Also, if you are willing to use 2 different airlines, it may be better to do 2 one way trips separately. I hope this makes sense.

Depending on the rental company, you can rent in one place and drop in another for free. This is usually in the more popular tourist places (like Florida) Other companies will let you do this, but charge a DROP FEE. This can be quite expensive. You need to contact the rental compay and ask about it.

It depends upon the airlines that you use. Any airline that sells seats on a one way basis (SW, JetBlue, Song, Independence etc) will let you do this without any penalties. Legacy carriers usually charge much more for one way tickets. Again, you need to try different combinations with your airline (use the web and plug in different airports)
