Advice for Broadway tomorrow night please?

We are going to Mary Poppins tomorrow night. I am embarrased of my ignorance, as I have never been to a Broadway show before, I have seen shows in Boston, do people still dress up? We are seeing the show at 8:00 pm. Also any suggestions on a good place to park? We are leaving in plenty of time as I am concerned although I am sure the roads will be clear , just want to be safe. One more thing, a place closeby for dinner that is good for a family?

As for dressing up... I don't really dress up, but I never wear jeans to see a Broadway show. Just what I was taught growing up.

In my experience, you will see everything from really dressed up to really casual. Shoot for the middle, church clothes maybe, and you'll be fine.

If you want a fun place to eat with kids My DD loves, loves, loves Ellen's Stardust Diner. The foods Ok, the shakes and stuff are old fashioned and great, but the singing waitstaff make it a fun night.

Sadly I don't think people regard the theater the way they used to. I'd say casual dress not evening or theater/opera formal. You want to be dressed enough to go to dinner after and feel comfortable. I was surprised myself first Broadway show I went to was years ago and we had orchestra seats and to be honest I saw fir coats but on-top of jeans lol I really didn't see many people dressed up. But I think same goes for Boston when I go to the colonial and wang I see people in sweats its kinda sad. I grew up when people got dressed for church and theater and heck I'm not even that old but I guess its just not the norm anymore. But to be honest wear whatever you want and forget about all those under dressed unappreciative people. Just Please keep perfume to a low as someone with serious allergies its the only thing that kills me in theaters and auditoriums otherwise I say dress up if you want to. Why not today's society is so over under-dressed in this country the concept of formal dress has become something only practiced by a few people.

I say bring it back dress up for the theater and for dinner =) and have fun knowing you look fabulous...

I wear jeans to Broadway shows sometimes, but my "nice" jeans - i.e. a darker wash & well-fitting, no holes or baggy fit. I wear them with boots & a nice top, and feel comparably dressed to most people there. It actually depends on which show I'm seeing how dressed up I get. This is probably weird, but I'd dress differently to see (for example) RENT than I would to see South Pacific. Different atmospheres & different audiences.

Have a wonderful time! You will love the show, it is stunning! You will see people in all manner of dress. I would wear what makes you comfortable. I like to dress up to go to the theater, so that is what I do. If you like Italian Family Style food, you could try Carmines or Tony's DiNapoli, both in Times Square. Have fun!

At the risk of labeling my family as "under dressed unappreciative people" according to this poster , I will say that we saw a Broadway show last week (West Side Story, which was fantastic!) and we wore -horrors- jeans! We dressed for comfort as we took mass transit and it was pretty cold out. Honestly I didn't really notice what people wore It's not like the Metropolitan Opera where people stand around at intermission and sip champagne. They sell Skittles in the lobby for goodness sake!

I will add that our family certainly appreciated the show and the entire experience. We try to get to shows as frequently as we can. Broadway is in some financial straits right now and I'm sure our ticket purchase was appreciated.

OP you can dress however you want, it seems you really can't be overdressed or underdressed these days.

I wore black dress pants and a nice top, DH wore business casual type clothes. I would say most people were about like that, with some being a lot more dressed up and some in jeans. The next day we saw Phantom of the Opera in the afternoon. We weren't planning on seeing it, just decided to get tickets in Times Square. We were in jeans and I was even wearing sneakers, I dressed for comfort for a day of walking. I was afraid we would look very underdressed (more because of the shoes than the jeans) but many people were dressed the same. I saw very few who were dressed up at all. Later that night we saw South Pacific, once again, on a whim, not planning to see it, so we were wearing the same thing we were wearing earlier. I wasn't too worried as most people had been so casual earlier and even at the evening show the night before, but once there, I felt VERY underdressed in my jeans and sneakers! Oh well, we had fun, the show was great, and I'll never see those people again!

Get dressed up! Why not. It isnt everyday that you get to see a Broadway show. It definitely is a special event!

Went last week and we went to Da Rosina for lunch becfore. It is a great place. They have price fixed lunch $22 and dinner $29!!! Tough to find restaurants where you can actually have a conversation without shouting....this was delightful as it was quiet and not too big. Food was delish with plenty to choose from .It is on W. 46th between 8th and 9th.
I've enjoyed Carmines many times but we now go back to DaRosina, it is just quaint and lovely!

You will have a magical time wherever you go!

I've seen Disney's Lion King, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aida. I'm debating between Billy Elliot and Mary Poppins for my next outing.

Everyone's right about clothes. It reminds me of going to Open House at my kids' schools. Parents wore everything from just-home-from-work clothes to questionablly themed T-shirts.

Your kids might enjoy mars2112 -- a Martian themed restaurant (on the idea of Rainforest Cafe) not too far from theaters.

I have no clue where to park. I have always taken the train & walked. We ate at Dallas BBQ it is close to or across the street from Mary Poppins. It was very good! We wore sweaters & jeans with our Ugg boots, but I've seen some dressed even more casual. Great show!
