Hello,

I've been around on these boards for a while now but haven't been posting because there was no trip on the horizon which made me sad!

We're now in a position to contemplate a trip again and I want to rent DVC points to do so. My problem is that what we want to rent a BWV studio for 16 nights, during the first 2 weeks of December which I know is peak period.

So, what's your advice? How do I maximise the chances of getting this gold-dust reservation? If I pay a deposit to a big company, how do I know which one to choose and what will happen if they can't get me the reservation? How do I pick who has the best chance? It's all ver confusing! :S

Thanks for any advice you're willing to offer. I'm very grateful.

If you're talking about a 2016 reservation, there's pretty much no chance of getting that many consecutive days at this point.

If you're talking about a 2017 reservation, then you're better off going through a private owner than you are going through one of the rental companies. A high-demand villa, during a period of high demand will almost certainly require not only someone with enough points to cover such a reservation, but also someone who is motivated to snag the first 7 nights at the 11-month window and then call MS repeatedly to add the additional nights until they have secured all 16 nights for you. A broker would have to wait until the day arrives when all 16 nights can be booked by an owner and at that point it is highly likely that one or more of those nights will not be open.

If you want to maximize your chance of getting a hard-to-get reservation with that many nights, you should begin checking the Rent/Trade Board, at least 12 months prior to the first day that you want to rent, for owners that have enough points at your desired resort.

Hello, yes I am talking about 2017 because 2016 would be crazy trying to get any availability!
Ok so now I understand a bit more about the process I can see why this seems an unlikely reservation to be able to get. I wasn't aware you could only book 7 nights at the 11 month window, but that makes sense.
I have no clue about how to check how many points people need or want or how home resorts work. Also how safe is it to book through a private member? Sorry for so many questions! Disney, I know, DVC, I don't. :S

@wdw_nutz, are you the same person as the OP?

There are a lot of places that you can check for the number of points you would need for a reservation. I find that the one on David's website is one of the easiest to use. Just plug in your dates and then choose "Show Point Amount" to see how many will be needed at the resort where you want to stay.

I also recommend reading up on the Rent/Trade Board to see how it works. Renting will always have some risks but if you are well-informed and do due diligence to protect yourself, the risks can be minimized. Some people have a higher tolerance for risk than others. You are the only one who can weigh those risks and determine whether you are comfortable with moving forward with a transaction.

Whoever you deal with, insist on a written contract to protect yourself and know what options are available, if something should come up that required re-scheduling. I have rented my excess OKW points out a few times and I stipulate no refunds or cancellations, but will help with trying to reschedule if possible.

Your best bet is to find a private owner with sufficient BWV points and work with them. Have them make your reservations for the 7 nights when available then they can add to it as you go along. You should have barely enough time to find someone and get comfortable with them before the reservation can be made in about 6-7 weeks.
