Hi all,
I am brand new to the DISboards so this is my first post ever. I have been reading all the trip reports for Adventures by Disney as I am going on my very first ABD (Viva Italia) with Allears next September and cannot wait!
I have not been to Europe in years so I am a little bit apprehensive. If anyone has any tips for this trip, I would so appreciate it! Thanks!

We are booked for that trip also! I've been reading trip reports to try to prepare for our Adventure.

Welcome to the DISBoards and the Adventures by Disney Forum, minnie4ever! Congrats on booking your first ABD! I'll warn you, as others have found out, ABD's are HIGHLY addictive! :) It's your first ABD, but it may not be your last!

We have a Meets thread for folks taking each of the ABD itineraries. The one for Viva Italia is here:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2933939

If you let me know the dates of your trip, and any folks traveling with you, I can add you to the Roll Call in the first post.

We have lots of folks here who have taken this trip, and loads who have been to Europe, so you should get plenty of tips! I'll come back & give you some tips of my own when I get a chance tomorrow!

We are also going with Deb and group Where do you live in Vermont? We live in the Berkshires.

It's an amazing trip! If you are coming in early, think about booking a tour in advance. For example, if you want to tour the tombs under St. Peter's, that needs to be reserved well in advance. Consider booking a food tour through http://www.eatingitalyfoodtours.com. We did the Twilight in Trastevere one on the day we arrived and not only was the food amazing, it was a nice way to get an in depth look at one small part of Rome.

But don't overschedule either. You don't want to feel like you're just running from place to place.

Minnie4Ever, what specifically are you apprehensive about? Several of us just returned and had a great time.

For us, this was our 4th ABD (3rd to Europe) and I will say Italy was the most "user friendly" of the countries that we have experienced. We did not have any language barriers that we encountered. With the help of the hotel concierge, taxis were reasonable and efficient. The food was good everywhere we went and our guides made numerous excellent suggestions. As for safety, traveling in a group is a huge plus as everyone sticks together and watches out for each other.

That's a great area of Rome ...great choice!

How far in advance to you book this?

Congratulations on taking the plunge with ABD. You won't be disappointed! I finally did Viva Italia in July(my 4th ABD) and had a great time. It was my third time in Italy, the first two were DCL cruises. As OP have said, you really won't have any language issues unless you are somewhere where only Italian is spoken. Everybody in the ABD hotels you stay in and in the tourist areas know several languages, including English. I also know a limited amount of Spanish and had no problems communicating with native speakers. As Rick Steve's says, always try to learn a couple of phrases. The guides will probably give you an Italian cheat sheet(Marco S. and Cathleen did) which was helpful and I got the Rick Steve's Italian phrase book before I left to be on the safe side.

I would recommend reading Rick Steve's book on Italy and going on Tripadvisor to see what there is to do in Rome, Venice and Florence and then look at the free time you will have. ABD does the major things, but you may have some things on your bucket list, like I did, that you want to do.

I came in a day early to Rome and went to Galleria Borghese(museum) and gardens. I got my ticket for the museum online well in advance because they only have timed entry. I also took the train to Florence to see the Uffizi Gallery the day the tour started. Again, I bought my train ticket and my ticket to the Uffizi(timed entry) online well in advance based on recommendations from Rick Steve's book. You do have between 2 and 4 hours of free time in Florence, but I wanted to spend that time shopping and not feel rushed in the museum. However, we did have one or two families who were able to get tickets to the Uffizi around 4pm after their tour of the Palazzo Vecchio by telling the ticket agent they had to catch the bus at 6pm. I believe our bus back to the hotel in Tuscany was at 6pm and 8pm. However, the Italian shops close around 6 or 6:30, so keep that in mind(I think the American ones stay open). Only one family in our group opted to come back at 8pm.

I love Italy and have never had a problem on my trips. I think the key is to research where you are going ahead of time. ABD takes a lot of the guess work out of traveling and the only thing you need to do is show up and they do the rest. I always book my pre and post nights through ABD. That way I know I'm in a safe area of town, have someone to pick me up at the airport, and breakfast is included(and sometimes wifi depending on the hotel). If you decide on a pre/post night, you can decide what works best for you. Enjoy your trip.

How far in advance to you book this?

One of our fellow travelers booked 2 tours several months in advance, but our situation was unusual because we had a group of about 24 from our tour who all wanted to go together. I saw on trip advisor that some people have booked just a few days before. The website has lots of information and you can just book online.

I didn't realize that Ian had attended the lunch at Kevin and John's favorite restaurant in Florence. He looks like he enjoyed the bruschetta.

Hi!
I am going Sept 3-11 2015 and I am going SOLO! I have not been to Europe in at least 25 years (so I am no spring chicken!). I guess I am a little apprehensive because it is such an expensive trip for a single. I also wanted to extend the trip to go to Disneyland Paris but I think that will break the budget for sure. Anyway I am excited for sure!

We are also going with Deb and group Where do you live in Vermont? We live in the Berkshires.

I live in Burlington. Have you booked your flights yet? I am in the process with my travel agent. No sure which airline to take. I also want to go the day before but the ABD price at the hotel is double what I can book myself. Hmm

I highly recommend going in at least the day before. Less stress & more options if there are delays, and time to recover from the jetlag.

You can always book the hotel yourself. The only thing you'd lose is the transfer to the hotel. And I've heard several people report that if you ask them, the hotel will sometimes put you in the same room for your entire stay.

We flew U.S. Air from Burlington to Philly to Rome last April and it was OK. I was never a big fan of U.S. Air but this flight went really good. Lufsthansa is GREAT to fly out of Newark, N.J. if you can get a flight to Rome. Flying out of Venice was easy-peasy and is a much smaller airport. I agree with Sayhello that we always try to fly in a day before for you never know what can happen.

ahhh Burlington, that's quite far up.

We confirmed our flights with our TA last Friday (through ABD).

We are flying in a day early, Boston to Rome via Alitalia direct non stop. We will use the parking facilities in Framingham.

We are staying at the Gran Melia, yes it is quite expensive but heard that the price has gone up since we originally booked it. I'm looking for the convenience of having ABD take care of us from touch down to take off. I'm a frequent traveler but nervous about overseas and new airports. Plus we are getting the insurance from ABD which will take care any issues with the air.

We were undecided on what to do on the return, so we are staying in Venice an extra day and will fly Venice to Amsterdam to Boston via KLM/Delta.

I really want to do the Twilight Trastevere Food Tour http://www.eatingitalyfoodtours.com/twilight-trastevere-food-tour/
on our arrival day. I read two trip reports on this and both raved about it. And from what I can gather, the tour takes place in the area of our hotel.
Not sure if others on our trip will be doing this. I plan on doing the 4:45 tour, since I know we will be tired that day. Not sure of what we will do the next day before our meet for dinner.

I'm excited about this trip. It will be our 2nd ABD with Allears group.

Thanks every one for your help. I guess I will have to go with the ABD hotel reservation ( but I am such cheapskate!)because the whole purpose of this endeavor is to be stress free. The ABD vacationista said that the concierge at the hotel can make any reservations for the extra day for me so I think I will see how jetlagged I am when I get to Rome. I know I was pretty tired from my Hawaii trip this last May. I crashed pretty early.;)
