We're taking my nieces to Hacienda de San Angel in a few weeks. After looking at the menu I realized that my 16.5 yr old picky eater will not eat anything on the adult menu. Will they allow her to order from the kids menu? I hate to cancel but if she can't order from the kids menu I'll have no choice. Thanks in advance for your advice! :thumbsup2

Don't have an answer for you but I'm curious as well so I'm bumping you back to the top.

My 12 year old is not an adventurous eater at all. She has a horrible diet. She still eats like a toddler (think mac'n'cheese or nuggets) unless we force it. I do force it alot at home and make her eat other things but I don't want to do that at WDW. #1 it is supposed to be fun for everyone don't want to ruin it over a meal. #2 I don't want to spend that kind of money on a meal she's only going to take 2 forced bites out of.

I have considered letting my 7 year old and my 12 year old order-swap tho. My 7 year old eats anything broccoli, spinach, everything. So that might would work for us.

Here's hoping someone has some advice.

If she won't eat off the regular menu then just have her save seats and order the kids meal she wants. Some might not like this answer but if a person wants to eat something off the kids menu then they should be able to.

The only problem is some WDW restaurants do not allow people over the age of 10 to order off the kids menu any more. I know there have been posts that the Plaza in MK for one doesn't allow it. Not sure if Hacienda de San Angel does or not.

I was referring to the quick service restaurants. It's not possible at the table service unless the kid's age is negotiable, but seeing this is a late teen I doubt it. lol

My daughter is not adventueous at all so when we ate at San Angel Inn in 2005 she ordered the cheese quesidilla off the childrens menu. And in 2009 she order a side order of mac and cheese at Le Cellier because she wasn't feeling good that night. I don't know how it ewould work if you were on the DDP as we were not those 2 times. But if you just ask the CM nicely they will accomodate you.

Maybe, Maybe not.
There was a LONG thread the past few weeks where a teenager was not allowed to order off the childs menu. Many folks posted their experiences as well.
Bottom line --- it is not guaranteed. The "Rule" is 9 and under and the restaurant has the right to enforce that at their discretion.
Good Luck

OF COURSE SHE CAN! :thumbsup2 Disney is so accommodating I did this all the time on the trips we took back in 2007-2008 when I was 14-15 and a picky eater, it was never a problem, they get it. Just say when you get there that you have a teenager in your party who would rather have a child's menu.

We've got posts that San Angel will do it, even providing an adult portion (higher price), and La Hacienda is run by the same company.

It's not Disney-wide. The rule is under 10 gets the kids menu, most restaurants overlook it, but apparently some won't. The Plaza is the most prominent current example.

I always order from the kids menu at quick service restaurants. I'm heading to Disney in a few days and I was thinking of ordering from the kids menu at Nine Dragons. I will let you know how it turns out!

I wonder if it would be best to say something like ....

I'd really like to eat X, I see that it's on the kids menu but not the adult. Is there any way I can get an adult portion of that?

We found Disney to be very accomodating. I think the main reason people are occasionally told "No" is because the kids meal comes with other items (drink, dessert) and is cheaper. Once you take those out of the equation and you're just talking about the entree - it might work.

I think that may work. I've read a few reports here recently from folks who have just returned, who have not been allowed to order off the kids menus, but it's probably because it's cheaper and comes with a drink, and if you specify that you would like an adult portion, they may let you do it. I think the key is not to expect it and to be polite and willing to pay the adult price.

Here is a recent post from someone who dined this month at San Angel (the sister restaurant to La Hacienda) and said their children (barely over 10) were not allowed to order off the kids' menu:

We visited the San Angel Inn (Mexico at Epcot) on July 15 for dinner.

- They have become very hard-nosed with the children's menu. A 10 year old is considered an adult there. They made it a point to ask the ages of the children before we sat down (I didn't lie) and they made it a point to ask their ages once we were seated (I guess to try and catch me in a lie). My DS10 and DS11 didn't like anything on the adult menu and wanted to order off the kids menu. Despite our protestations to the seater, the server and the manager, we were forced to pay double the kids meal price for a kids meal for each kid. They got a portion that was twice the kids meal size, which was too much food for them to eat.

So, it sounds like as long as you are willing to pay the adult price, they'll allow you to order the kid-friendly food.

DD is 14 and very fussy. Although she has been a Disney adult for quite a few years she has been ordering off the children's menu very often during this time. Sometimes she does split with me or will just have an appetizer, if it works out well. In that time twice we have been told that she could not order off of the kids menu, but could have a kids menu item in an adult portion for a higher price. That is completely reasonable so that is what we have done in those cases. We have not eat in de San Angel, so no first hand experience there. However I agree with many of the other posters, it just depends on the resturant and the server. Good Luck and enjoy your trip.
