We will be using the dining plan for the first time this June. I studied hard and sellected 8 sit-downs for our 8 nights and made the resies on the 180 day mark. NOW I wonder if I should make a few back-up ADRs in-case we need to change plans - so we'll have a back-up choice. There are not any major places I want to add and we would not go off plan for another sit-down. Has anyone else done this - made more ADRs than you knew you would use?

I personally have never made back up ADR's. I make the one's that I want and we either use them or we don't. If something happens and we're unable to make it to the ADR's that I reserved and we decide to go somewhere else at a different time then we go to that other place and just walk up to ask for seating. I always try to call to cancel the ADR's that I originally booked if able. We've never been turned away from any of the restaurants even during peak, shoulder to shoulder crowds. You may have to wait a bit longer to be seated, but you should get seated without any problems so I wouldn't worry about back up ADR's.

I don't think you can book 2 ADR's for the same "meal period" without risking all your ADR's being cancelled.

Having said that, if you're willing to use DDP credits for lunches, it probably wouldn't hurt to make "back-ups" for lunches at some of your favorite places for later during your stay. And MariaEller had a good suggestion, too--if you change your mind and can get a walk-up or last minute ADR for somewhere else, take it, call to cancel your existing ADR, and know that you won't miss out on your favorite places since you have a lunch planned for later in the week.

If you are talking about making them during the time frame you have another ADR made, you can't do that. Disney has cracked down on double-bookings.

I don't make back up ADR's but I usually book a couple of "extra" breakfasts which I never know if we are actually going to go to.

In December 05 I booked three breakfasts for the 7 nights and used the DDP for one and paid OOP for the other and cancelled one the day before.

In May 06 I booked 2 breakfasts and ended up cancelling both of them.

In October 06 I booked 3 breakfasts and ended up using all of them (I used the DDP for for one of them but I should have used it for 2 of them because I ended up adding a meal we didn't really want just to use up the credits).

If you change your mind about a meal while you are at Disney, just call dining from your room. While you may not get your first choice of restaurants the day before, I've always been able to get something in my top 3 choices when I have changed ADR's the day of or the day before.
