We will be at WDW 10/26-10/29. This is the time we have gone in the past (twice) and it's not peak season. I'm wondering if I need to get overly anxious about booking our ADR's at 180 days. Do they fill up quickly this time of year? We aren't doing any character dining or Cinderella stuff ... just 50's Prime Time and not sure of what else yet.

I'd only say to worry if you want to eat around 6:30-7...or if you want places like Boma, Ohana, Chef Mickeys, CRT, etc.

If you're flexible with times and want less popular places, you should be ok...but why wait? You can always book and cancel or change reservations.

We were there last year in this same time frame and got same day reservations without any problem. We did not do any character meals.

If your open to different possibilities & times, then either you or concierge services can find you a same day reservation. If you have a certain favorite or one you must have or a certain time, then I would make the ADR.

We have gone in October the last 10 years. Each trip has been busier that the trip before. October is no longer a slow time period. The F & W festival, MNSSHP and fall breaks around the country have led to more guests.
We always make ADR's since we have specific restaurants we want to eat at, during peak dining hours. If you know there is somewhere you want to eat in a park, than I suggest an ADR. If you are open to what may be available somewhere, than I agree you will get a same day seat.

Is there a time frame that you have to cancel ADR's without a penalty? I'm wondering if we make ADR's for a certain day and then change plans to go to another park that day, do I have to cancel the ADR's 24 hours in advance without penalty? We are staying CL at BWI, so the cast members there will be able to help us with reservations. My big thing is incurring a charge if we don't give enough advanced notice.

Only for the ADRs that require credit card holds - CRT, Dinner shows, and others I can't remember. When you make your ADR by phone or computer, and you are asked for credit card #, then it should tell you what the cancellation policy tome frame is. Most do not require this hold.

OP, I would suggest making some adr's, but you don't have to make them 180 days out unless your heart is set on a specific time and place, or you have a large party. We have made adr within a few weeks for popular places without difficulty.
