I notice online reservations has some open tables available for party of 4, but not party of 2. Would it be advisable to go ahead and reserve for a party of 4, but 2 show up? Do you think there is a some kind of penalty associated with that?

Any advice will help. Thanks!

Based on reading the posts on the later pages, they still take a party of 2 even with a ressie of 4. Sounds like if you go higher in party that gives you more headache than the other way around (except for some restaurants and the cc hold). I'll keep reading some more to confirm this.

I'm sure you will get mixed reviews on whether booking for 4 instead of 2 to get seated is "ethical". My take on it is, I'd seriously look down on a restaurant or host(ess) that wouldn't seat a party of 2 at an open 4 top table. Since the online system can't make this distinction, I'd have no problem doing it.

I have been advised by CMs both on the phone and in person to do this b/c there are limited tables for 2 but plenty of 4 tops.

Really it is up to you if you wish to do that. As said, there is no penatly to show up with less people than the adr is for, except if it is a prepay like CRT.

So the question is really an "ethical" question, and that is something that no one can answer for you.

Do you want it bad enough to know you are denying a family a seating?
Do you feel it is ok because it opens up some room for those "walk ups"?

Either way it is your choice, can't answer it for you.
