The email I received says you must cancel "one day" prior. My question I this: does it need to be a full 24 hours or can it be anytime the day prior? I have an ADR for lunch at the CP at 1:15 pm that I would prefer to cancel if my 2 year old is terrified of characters... but I won't know until we see them at the Character Spot at 3:00 pm the day prior. Would that be too late to cancel without penalty?

It's 24 hours from what I've heard BUT I'm sure you could call Disney and speak to someone and discuss your scenario. I'm sure they would be able to assist you and not charge you the fee if you cancelled within the 24 hour period.

It is not 24 hours for regular dining. As long as you cancel the day prior you are fine

This is very bad advice.
What number do you call to “ call Disney “? Calls go to an offsite call center. The CM who answers that call is likely not even in Florida and definitely is not at the restaurant.
Disney does not “discuss “ their policies.
Other posters have given good advice. For regular TS locations you can cancel up to 11:59 PM the evening before.

Just so that there is no misunderstanding since I felt that the previous post was somewhat ambiguously worded:

Despite the fact that OP does not need to call as long as the cancellation is one day in advance, the fact that the CMs on the phone are at an offsite call center has no bearing on them being able to cancel the reservation and waive the fee. They can and have done both.

We were sick this past trip (about a week or so ago) and had two ADRS one day. The morning of those ADRs I called the number MDE gives you to cancel, the CM asked why we were cancelling, I said we are sick.

We were not charged the $10 fee.
