Adoption question????

It looks like we will be getting a six month old baby boy to adopt soon. (This completely changes my planning for our vacation in December, but that's a different thread.) Anyways, has anyone adopted that age before? He has been in a very good foster home up to this point. I guess I just can't imagine what a baby goes through when he is all of a sudden taken to a new home and he's looking around for a familar face. While I'm happy, it seems a little sad for the baby. Just wondering what other's experiences have been because I know others on this board have talked about adoption.

I have a day care and six months old is the age for them to start being leary of strangers......is there anyway you can start visiting the baby daily so that he can get used to you and want to be with you too.......I am so excited for you ........what a great great thing to have happen in your family......good luck and keep us posted

I never adopted but I know that at that age my girls were very different. The oldest didn't mind other people but my youngest didn't like anyone she didn't know. I don't think it would take someone of that age long to adjust but it will depend on what type of child they are.

A friend adopted a baby girl that had been in foster care just a couple of months and the foster mother had a scrapbook and she also had a chance to meet them. Hopefully you'll get to meet them and they will give you lots of information about all his sweet quirks and how he expresses himself

How wonderful for you and your family! We adopted Kayla at 5 weeks and Michael at 3 weeks of age! There is nothing more wonderful after having gone through all the physical, mental and financial tests to know that you not only qualify but are going to be selected by the birthmothers! It truly made our adoptions very special occassions.

Ditto on the blessing to the foster and tender care parents - they truly have a challenging job. I could never do it because of the emotional attachment. They do such an important job, we all need to thank them heartily!

How wonderful for you! Congratulations.

I worked with a woman who adopted a 6-month old baby boy from Korea. He was very well cared for, the adoption agencies are some of the best in the world as far as caring for their infants, but cultural differences (the baby is always carried in a sack, or Snuggly; they all sleep on the floor, to name a few things different) left my friend feeling as though the baby would have a long transition period. When she got the baby, she was pleasantly surprised to find that wasn't the case. I don't know if she just got lucky, but this baby is the happiest, most well adjusted little boy! He took virtually no time to adjust to his new surroundings, and is very advanced for his age. He'll be 2 years old this June, and they are now in the process of adopting another baby from Korea.

Hopefully your baby boy's transition will be just as smooth.

My DW and I adopted a 7 month old baby girl from Mexico in 1991, we did however, get to see the baby when she was 2 months old, 4 months old, and 6 months old. The baby was being taken care of by a missionary, and whenever we visited, the missionary would give us the baby to take care of. Today, this beautiful young lady is getting ready to turn 13 years old, she is the light of our lives, and the apple of our eyes, despite the attitude she tends to have, I went into more detail on another thread about this topic.

Best of luck to you and CONGRATULATIONS, adopting our daughter, after losing two girls in infancy, was a Blessing and a gift from Heaven.

And yes, your life will never be the same!!!

First of all CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Check to see if the adoption agency offers any classes for you to take. My husband and I eventually want to adopt, but we decided to start with foster care. We just finished our foster classes last month. There were several adoptive families in the class with us. Everyone found the classes very informative. The program we are working with has a wonderful class and many highly recommend it. If you have any questions about it or want to talk feel free to PM or e-mail me.
