ADHD Onboard

Oh!!! I've been wanting to ask how that place was! I was looking at doing that and maybe going to check out a couple of the forts. My DH doesn't swim very well, so snorkel excursions sound like torture to him, but we all love pirates and ships and history so those seemed really cool. I hadn't been able to find much in the way of trip reports about these particular places though so I wasn't sure how cool they'd actually be for a kid. But your kids liked the Pirate Museum? How long would you say is a good time to allot for spending there?

Oops. I'm editing this because I just reread your post and realized you said you did this BEFORE you had your son. It's late and I may or may not have had a glass of wine. :rolleyes1

I am a history buff and I enjoyed it. It's not very big (or it wasn't), so I think we spent less than about an hour there. We walked from the docks, saw the Straw Market, stopped at the oldest Cathedral in the New World (lovely!), and then headed over to the museum.

Now, this was in 2003. They don't recommend you walk around Nassau any more, according to the cruise guides I've seen.

Here is an older thread for ideas on incorporating some of your homeschool around the cruise. I love the idea of unit studies on the ports you plan to visit before going.

Oh, awesome!!!

I already have unit studies planned for the three weeks before we leave! I know my son, and if I start our homeschool year at the end of August (as normal), then take a week off for the cruise, getting back to work once we're home will be torture. So the entire month of September will be researching the places we're visiting.

Math will start up again once we get BACK. LOL!

I love this! We've been having so much fun lately studying Egyptian history and myths because my DS got excited about mummies, so studying the ports and pirates there would be a great way to link the education to the cruise too.

I love the lack of faith in my instructions :)

I know that isn't what you meant, just laughing at the phrasing. Happy it worked out.

Actually , I was amazed that this old gray haired non technical granny figured out how to accomplish what you so superbly described in your "how to ". I was quite giddy when it worked. It doesn't take much to make me happy . Thanks again.

Since you've done cruises with your son before, what did you find the CM response to him to be? Did you talk to them ahead of time?

We didn't talk to anyone before hand. but the info about my son is in his packet so if there was an issue the staff would know.

One story, though, which is why Disney is the best. On the Dream one year around dinner time (a very busy time) we ran into Christiaan who was Cruise Director at the time. My son stopped him and mentioned that we had seen him on the Adventures America TV show detailing the Disney ships. (which we DVR'ed and watch in preparation for every cruise). Christiaan stopped said hello and continued to talk for a good 5 minutes, which was 5 minutes he probably didn't have, to my sons about the show and he asked how the cruise has been. Again another "Disney" special moment. So for an English essay for class this year he was prompted to write about someone famous he met and in the essay he mentioned his meeting Christiaan.
