Adding 3 year old to magic key pass?

I called Disney magic Key guest services and was unable to get an answer to this question. They told me I would have to speak in person to the ticket booth. Therefore I thought I would ask the question here.

My family of six have magic keys, but my youngest has been less than 3 years old. He will be turning three next month and I will need to add him, but keys are sold out. My understanding is that we have to be in person to purchase a magic key within 60 days of him turning 3 years old. We will be traveling to Disneyland from Washington State later this month. Prior to him turning three. I thought we could purchase him a magic key at that time, but I wasn't sure if it would activate on the day of purchase which would be before him turning 3 years old, or if it would activate on the first day of use like our other magic keys.

If it activates on the day of purchase, I would prefer to not purchase the key until he is 3 years old and we are visiting the park.

Since I live so far away from the park going to the ticket booth to get this question answered is somewhat difficult unless we are visiting the park.

Does anyone have experience with this?

I purchased a Magic Key for my child who was 3 years old when Magic Keys were not available for sale. It must be done in person at the ticket booth, and you must bring your child and your child's original birth certificate. They scrutinized my son's birth certificate very closely and him, and even made a comment about him being so big, like maybe he was older than 3 but I had the birth certificate to prove it. (Yes, he is very big for his age, not sure what to say about that! 🤷‍♀️)

We used the Magic Key that day, so that is the day it activated. I think if you did not use the Magic Key on that visit (which you should not have to since he won't be 3 years old yet), it should activate on first use. That's how it usually works. Hopefully there isn't any difference regarding these special-circumstance Magic Keys for 3 year olds.

Thanks this is my hope!!!! Alternatively, I thought of sending my wife and the soon to be 3-year-old on a solo trip In January about 60 days after his birthday to buy the pass and not have to pay for the time we won't be using it.

I bought my then-2yo a MK online when they were still available online since I wasn’t sure when they would stop selling them. It didn’t activate until he used it to enter the park later that year after he had turned 3. He’s smaller for his age and I often run into the opposite reaction from CMs… they insist that he doesn’t need a ticket and I insist he has a MK!

As a followup for anyone who may care. I added my soon turning 3 year old to our magic keys and it won't activate until we use his pass for the first time as it is with other magic key passes. It was easy just showed them the birth certificate.

Glad it worked out!
