I am looking to add a line for dd ,almost 14 for xmas. Att website is having free overnight shipping with free activation fee. I am considering the Samsung magnet or LG Neon. I want something that is sturdy; does anyone have an info?

DD's freind has the neon and it's very basic, but she likes it alot.

DD has the Pantech matrix and it has held up very well over the last year or so.

Not sure about the phones - but a note about the services. We picked up the matrix pp mentioned for free with free shipping in October because we were told we can wait until a couple of days before Christmas to activate it and not incur monthly charges until it is activated.

ETA - our babysitter has the neon and loves it but can give no more detail than that.

I'm looking to add a line for my DS13 - also w/ AT&T.

The problem I'm running in to is that many of the phones say they require an additional Data Plan which I don't want to pay for :confused3

I always ask the people at the service center which phones come in the most for repair. You may have to get them to give you the service center's number, because they're not always well published, and I know ours center is in a weird location. I don't specifically know either of those models, but I have a Samsung pocket camera, video camera, cell phone (Blackjack II) and TV... if that tells you anything.

I'm also going to reply to Starbrite about the data plans.

My kids REALLY liked to pick out their phones. I'm picking out dd8's, because she doesn't care (it'll live in her dance bag).

Which carrier are you using? Make sure you don't go into a reseller's store. You want to make sure you have the agreement in writing. With AT&T, you're required to have the data plan on the Blackberrys, Palms, and iPhone. That's exactly why my smartphone is the Samsung Blackjack II. I paid the text plan for the two or three months required to get the rebate, then dropped the text plan. All I want is up-to-date contacts and appointments, and I don't need internet access for that.

I don't have At&t but I have a tip for you as a mother:

Make sure you have the premium text option turned off on your daughter's cellphone. I found this out the hard way when we had $20 worth of subscription charges to stuff he entered into on the internet, I think.

I am waiting until he gets home today to yell at him... I'm sooo furious!!!

ITA. At that age, half the fun is picking out the phone (and I hope the stores stock up for the 26th in anticipation!).

I've found ATT customer service to be pretty good, why don't you call them to get the details (you may have to reset your contract for the next 2 years from the time you add her line, so you need to consider whether you can live with your phone for 2 more years or face retail prices).

As for data plans, I think smart phones, like the iPhone, require it. If you stick with the QWERTY keyboard ones like the Xenon or the Propel, you don't need to add it. Although you do need to add it if you want picture texting.

We had exaclty the same problem! On Sunday Att.com had blackberry's with the same deal I mentioned. So I was all set to add a line and then I see that you have to have a data plan. I argued with the chat lady because my DH has a Blackberry without a data plan. Apparently this went into effect in September. Which means when my husbands changes his phone or upgrades we have to get a data plan or not get it! :headache: I hate feeling like I am being forced into to something I have little choice over. According to ATT all the cell companies are starting to do this! What I crock!

DD's pantech matrix, which has a qwerty keyboard, recieves picture texting (or called MMS) and does not have a data plan. We also do not inclur additional monthly charges. She also recieves songs from freinds on her phone for no additional charge. (other than the unlimited texting we have already).

Perhaps it's something new as she has had her phone for a year, but DD's friend who has the neon does not have a data plan but that phone also has a data plan.
