My daughter would like an acoustic guitar (what ever that is!). Is there a perferred brand out there? Will it be expensive?

Our local store has an Cort AD850 spruce top acoustic with case, etc for $200. Is this a good guitar?

Jodi1980,

The first question that needs to be answered is, how serious is your daughter about learning to play the guitar? An acoustic guitar is a guitar that does not require electricty to be heard. IT's made of wood, is hollow, and is a pleasure to play. If your daughter is only a little serious about playing, then $200 for the guitar is pretty good. If she is really seriuos and she wants a quality guitar, I'm afraid that it's going to be more than $200. Two of the best brands are Martin and Gibson. Martin guitars start at around $1,000, whereas Gibson guitars begin around $600. When it comes to musical instruments, the saying, "What you pay is what you get" holds very true. Good luck in finding a guitar suitable for your daughter's needs.

mickey76's was a great post. :) if she is really interested, get her the better one now and save yourself from having to upgrade in a year. :)

She is not serious - just wants to play around with it from time to time.

If you can, have a friend who plays go with you to purchase it. Anyone who plays knows what is important when it comes to getting a good instrument.

My oldest ds plays the guitar. He plays an electric one but also has an acoustic. He paid $99 for his Epiphone. I would start of with one that is not expensive incase she doesnt stick with it.
My ds has been playing 2 years and loves it.

Both of my brothers play the guitar and have taken lessons. I'm a piano girl, but when I get the urge I ask my bros to teach me a song or two. Let me tell you, it's not easy, it takes practice, not a casual interest to play the guitar. And it's not for a girly girl, meaning that if your DD has soft skin hands and likes her nails she's going to have to give that up playing the guitar. It hurts my fingers! so to play well you need to get those calouses on your fingers. Needless to say, I don't try to play that much these days:p

I don't know that much about guitars, if you want I can ask my brothers. They're both very into guitar playing. And if your daughter gets a good instrument, she might just end up loving it and wanting to play all the time. Lessons really made a difference, of course, in my brothers' love for music. Good luck to your daughter!!!:D

You also might want to check out pawn shops and the classifieds in your local paper. You can save a ton of money on a used guitar and assuming there is no major damage it shouldn't affect the sound. If you are looking for a fairly inexpensive guitar these would be the places I would look.

My BF buys and sells guitars. Takamine makes guitars that are very nice sounding and not that expensive. You might try looking in your local paper under musical instruments. People buy guitars all the time and then never learn to play them and sell them cheap. Or ask the music store if they have any used guitars to sell. Sometimes they also have guitars that someone may have put a small ding in trying it out at the store and therefore they reduce the price on it; try looking for one of those also.

I purchased a Cort with strap, case, tuner and some picks for $199. It's so beautiful. I put one of the picks on our computer keyboard and when my daughter came home, she asked me what have I done? By that time, I had the guitar out on my bed. She started to cry and kept asking me why did I buy one. I told her because I loved her and I was proud of her. I believe most of her tears came from me coming home to dirty dishes in the den and her room still messy! I just love surprising loved ones!

:D

That's an awesome story Jodi!!!!! Congrats! I hope your daughter enjoys playing music as much as I do and the rest of the musicians here on the DIS.
