Anybody have any experience with these? Mostly I just care about reliability issues. My dog bumped into me today, and I ended up knocking my laptop off a table and the screen broke, so I need a new one.

I got an Acer Extensa at Best Buy about 3 months ago for $399 and its been great so far. I did the same thing with my HP laptop - busted the screen. The Acer laptop was a great price so I couldn't beat it for that price. Hope you get more responses but as of right now I am very happy with my Acer

I am currently using an Acer laptop and have been using one for almost two years. It has been by far the best laptop I've had (I've never had a MacBook though ;) ).

I think they are great from all aspects, performance, technical, durability, everything.

As far as their reliability goes I think it really depends on which specific model you are looking for, but I think that applies to all laptops and brands.

Mine is quite big and heavy thus I imagine it would be damaged if dropped.

Hope I helped a little bit.

:goodvibes

I have an Acer Aspire and I like it...but I've only had it for a few months.

We've had Acer, IBM, Dell, and HP. IBM (now Lenovo) is the best for reliability, followed closely by Dell, then Acer, and HP is the worst of the four.

Had a Samsung, reliability was a joke. Ditto Dell.

Got an Acer, had no problems with it, still no problems with it four years later. Got another Acer, had a problem with it 18 months in but repaired within 24 hours on their extended warranty (new motherboard), didn't pay a penny.

Learnt after the Samsung fiasco the value of an extended warranty (they wouldn't touch my 12 month 3 week old laptop with the same fault they had repaired on it 4 months previous - a KNOWN issue with that type of laptop which was subsequently removed from sale - for under $400). Bought Acer because their 3 year warranties are good - paid $100 for a 3 year one, including accidental damage.

Getting an Acer netbook in the new year, too.

Hey PaPa, My dd has an ACER laptop and uses it everyday. I also have one that I use for business travel and love it! No problems!

One of the very first P.C.s I owned was an Acer. It was such a POS I will never, ever buy another Acer. It might be the best computer on the market now, for all I know, but that experience left an impression on me.

I've been using an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop for about 2 years and haven't had any problems.

It is unfortunate that Acer is such a small brand that Consumer Reports didn't even see fit to evaluate it in May when it last evaluated laptop reliability. What is interesting about their results, though, is that the difference between most reliable and least reliable laptops was relatively minuscule. Lenovo and Compaq (the best) were pegged at 20%, while Apple (the worst) was pegged at 23%. Consumer Reports called reliability a tie, which makes sense, after all this time: They various brands are all using the same components sourced from comparable component manufacturers, and performing assembly to the same standards, with the same relative knowledge, experience and quality of work staff.

As such, you're better-off making your decision about which laptop to purchase based on considerations other than reliability.

I have had no good experience using a Compaq laptop and most of the people I know haven't either.:confused3

I forgot to mention in my previous post, I have the Acer Aspire 9300.

I bought one last year for $349 at Wal-Mart during a pre-Thanksgiving sale. From a reliability perspective, it's been rock-solid.

I love my Acer Aspire. It's got a 17" screen and a full number pad. I haven't had any problems with it.

One thing you should probably watch for is you want at least 2g RAM for Vista because it's quite a memory hog.

We have had two Acers and DH (the computer nerd) likes them. I'm happy as long as I can access the Dis (and TGM), but he does a lot more with our laptops. We are looking for a new laptop in the last 6 months and DH is considering another Acer.

I had an Acer laptop before my HP...and frankly, the Acer was better. :confused3

We have an laptop from Acer for about 3 years and another from www.ibuypower.com which is the one I prefer and use everyday for personal and business. I've had this laptop from ibuypower for over 4 years it will be 5 this summer. It hasn't given me one problem (i don't want to jinx myself). I love it and it wasn't that expensive. Great customer service too! Check out the ibuypower website and compare before you buy anything else!

I did a lot of research before buying on www.notebookforums.com
I don't consider myself a computer guru at all, but the people on their forum helped me buy materials and build 3 desktops for our business over the past years...what a helpful group.

I also forgot to say that we have a Sager Laptop that my husband uses for his business for about 5 years, it's the ultimate laptop! He loves it and would buy another. There are a lot of reviews on the notebook forums about all of them.

Which just goes to show how little our own personal anecdotal experiences map to reality. Given that all the manufacturers are basically the same with regard to reliability, that's going to be the case even more so than otherwise, because the reality lends itself not even to any strong bias towards or away from any of the manufacturers.

I have a very "mixed" experience with Acer laptops.

I bought a cheap $500ish Acer laptop about 2 years ago. I had problems with it from Day ONE. The laptop would slow down and freeze so it could not be used. I returned it to Acer to be be repaired probably a dozen times. On one hand their customer service was very good ... they took the laptop back again and again and again. On the other hand, the tech support sucked. They returned the laptop to be with the same problem again and again and again. They even tried giving me a new same model laptop but it appreas the problem was with the MODEL and not the individual machine. I googled the model number and the symptoms and I wasn't the only one with the same problem.

FINALLY ... Acer sent me a replacment laptop which was a different model. I have had that laptop for nearly a year and it has been flawless.

I bought an Acer last January, and at first, I had trouble connecting to our wireless. DH is a computer guy, and it took a lot to get it so it would connect. I still have issues at time. It just doesn't want to catch onto the internet. DH has no trouble with his laptop - just my Acer.

Other than that, it's a good laptop.
