Lucky us... our kids birthdays are not only close together, but also right before Christmas. We do all of the shopping at once.

My son is very boyish... loves video games so we already got him a Leapster and a game for that. He has the old, old gameboy and the old old playstation, so we will upgrade them "someday" just not sure if now is the time. He LOVES sports, so we got him a tee-ball bat and bases set. But what else?? I got him the rescue heroes stuff over the past couple of years and he NEVER plays with that stuff. He has a bike that he rides constantly... and a little skateboard that he "tries" to ride. Is there anything really cool out right now??

What about cars. My DS just turned 6 and I am getting him a hotwheels race track. Also he is legos and things like that. So I got him the geomag building set. My DS loves books so I got him books too.

I am going to upgrade my DS to a gameboy advance. And a couple of games. I did get him the teeball set too! The past couple of years he has gotten rescue heroes stuff. How funny, we are basically getting the same stuff. :)

Us too. DS is getting a hotwheels racing track (not sure which one yet) lots of LEGOs and a few games for his playstation/game boy advanced. Also a few movies and books.

We also got him rescue heros for the past few years. He plays with them some, but he didnt' care a bit about the MACC he got last year. (mountain action command center). I was so excited about getting it for him last year. But he loves his legos and his hotwheels. So I got him a huge lego set and some smaller themed sets for christmas. I'll also get him some more hotwheels and a racetrack for them.

Has anyone bought the gold Lego anniversary set? I'm just wondering how many gold blocks are actually in there. I know the Lego store in DTD is a big hit with us, so I was thinking about getting that one for Christmas.

Oh, Christinadei, we've got the MACC, and I have to admit that it got a lot of interest on the day we set it up out of the box, and maybe a few other times.

I almost bought the golden anniversary set, but Toys'r'us had the big set with 1500 legos and then a bonus box of 500 for the same price (19.99) so I thought it was a better deal. I can't remember how many the 50th anniversary one had, I'm thinking 1000.

Oh and I saw that the MACC was on sale at our Toys'r'us, the green tag sale. Don't know if any are left.

My son got the large canister of tinker toys for Christmas when he was 5. He's turning 9 the week before Christmas & there's hardly a day that goes by that he doesn't play with them (and my DD10). Definitely the best gift he ever received.

How about a train set? When my ds was 4 we started buying the Fisher Price Geotrax set and all of my kids love it, they can build the track themselves however they want and it's really sturdy.

Legos - Star Wars and the Dinosaur sets. Also, any sets that have people in them. My son and his friends play with these alot. If play guns are allowed at your house, we spend a lot of time have Nerf shootouts.

Lincoln Log sets, Legos, GeoMags.

There's a fairly new toy out call Battle B Daman (I think there's a cartoon, too). They're usually near the Beyblades stuff. They are sort of like small action figures (a little bigger than Lego men) and you put a marble in the back and press the lever and the marble shoots out. If you buy the game set it comes with little barrels and stuff that you can try to knock over. Sort of hard to explain here but take a look at them (Target, Toys R Us etc.) - my DS just got some and loves them.

what about the imaginext dinosaurs? ds went to a party recently and all the boys were having a great time playing with all the dinosaurs..

ds loves his MACC center.

My almost 5 year old son (12/14) LOVES Playmobil toys. I bought him the Viking Ship for his upcoming birthday. He also loves his Tinker Toys and these Pappo figurines (knights and such). He is getting a wooden fortress for them from Santa (from Learning Express - I also saw one in the FAO Schwarz catalog that was similar, but more $$).

My son is going to be 5 on saturday and he keeps asking for power ranger toys.

I also vote for the Tinker Toys. Toys have come & toys have gone in our house...but DS7s Tinker Toys are still used all the time...we've had them for 4 or 5 years. He has not had any other toy for this length of time.

We have the plastic kind. I'm not sure if they still make this kind...but I do see them at yard sales all the time.

His only other passions are YU-GI-OH and STAR WARS.

My absolute BEST idea would be magnetix if he's not too young for them. DS9 has had his for a few years and still plays with them and wants more pieces for every occasion.

What about a Brio train set? DS loved his. Played with it endlessly. Now at 10, he will still pull it out.
I agree with the Hot Wheels track as well, but DS enjoyed the city track MUCH more than the racing sets when he was that age. Probably because they were easier to set up and always 'worked' correctly.
Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs were big. Legos, K'nex are all still big hits here.

I went to TRU today and had much better luck with DD's shopping that my son. As I said he's getting a Leapster, but we wanted something more for bday and then everything for Christmas. But today nothing jumped out at me at the store. The Viking ship and magnetix stuff was cool, but it honestly looks too hard for a 5 year old to me (am I naive??).

I found a scooter we plan to get at some point, but really nothing else for him. Oh, we did get an Operation game and my mother wants to get him his MUCH desired microscope & I found one to tell her about. That's about it though. I guess I'll have to take him there and see what he has to say about stuff.

Hi moopdog!

The magnetix are just a series of magnetix sticks. Nothing hard about them. :) Of course, your ds may do some silly things with them! My ds had supermags and figured out (while at the doctor's office) that they could stick together through skin, so he looked like he had his ear pierced... his lip.... his nose... Our nurse thought this was hysterical and kept encouraging him. LOL!
The supermags are VERY strong! Later he discovered that they would stick to his braces. Boys! ;)
Only now, at 10, does he really try to copy some of the shapes they show.

One of the best gifts my DS received last year when he was 5 was an interactive globe. He loves it still and it has taught him so much about geography, while being fun. This year, he is very interested in space, so I am thinking about a solar system mobile, glow-in-the-dark star sets and possibly a telescope.
