On 10/23, DH and I went out to dinner. He parked my car at a 24 hour meter, thinking he didn't have to put $ in after 6 pm. We came out to a ticket from the town. Yesterday I wrote the check out to pay, and saw on the bottom of the ticket, it says "fines double every 14 days". I will only be mailing it today, for the original fine. How strict are they with the 14 day rule, and how will I know if the fine has doubled? I will also post on the community board, hoping to get some idea of how up the creek I am. I dated the check 10/31.

DH and I had that same problem and we just sent it in double so we didn't have to deal with any issues in the future. You could always call the town and see if 14 days applies to business days or not. We just always stick to the rule 'better be safe than sorry'. Good luck.

we mainly go by the post mark date. If it doesn't state business days, it is probably not. I think you're ok, but I agree. CALL the town.

If people call me and acknowledge it and say checks in the mail, we don't add the penalty if the postmark is before the 14 days.

Hope it works out.

It's an expensive lesson, but I always check for the placard that lists the hours of operation before I fail to pay a meter. If my meter doesn't have a placard, and the ones next to it don't either, I just pay even if I think I don't need to. Better to donate a few coins to the local municipality than to deal with a possible ticket.

JMHO.
