I understand the benefit of on-line check-in when the airline does not assign seats prior to checking in.

But what if you have already picked your seats? Is there a benefit then. We will still have luggage to check, so will still have to wait in line- right?

You won't have to wait in the main check-in line. At Philly, off to the side of the main check-in, are kiosks and airline personnel who scrutinize your boarding passes, look over your ID documents and provide baggage tags and you then hand over your luggage to the TSA. reps. It can often save a lot of time.

Online check in allows you to pick your own seats and make sure you are sitting together.

It also speeds things up. We fly Sun Country out of MSP. We can use curbside check in and head straight for security. If we need to visit the counter, we are allowed to use the VIP/Web Check-in line.... very nice....

My big thing is picking where I am sitting on the plane... fun to do.

Online check in usually saves you time. I flew this morning from Orlando to Charlotte. They had changed the size of the plane. Everyone that had checked in from home had to go to the desk and get a new boarding pass with a new seat assignment.

They had still messed things up. It ended up being open seating and people were not happy. We were delayed almost half an hour over it.

A previous poster cited streamlined baggage check-in for passengers who already have boarding passes, but that will vary from airport to airport. At our airport in St. Louis, for example, there's not really any benefit to checking in online if you have to check bags too. You still have to wait at at a curbside or in-airport check-in line that could issue your boarding pass at the same time, so where's the time savings? I always check-in online when I don't have luggage, but it's never been an advantage with luggage.

We're flying out of Pittsburgh tomorrow and we've already got our boarding passes. When we get to the airport, we just go to the Continental kiosk and indicate we have x number of bags, receive the baggage claim, leave your luggage with the attendant and away you go. It's a lot faster than standing in line waiting for the "next available person". IMO, it's one of the easier ways to travel. There usually isn't a long line waiting for a kiosk.

We have curbside check in here in Phoenix. We will print out our passes tomorrow afternoon and then just check our bags curbside!

It is nice checking in from home because you can always change your seats. The earlier you can do that the better. That beats standing at the counter while they look for seats.

I've used it to change my seat if I had a bad one. For example, on a business trip to Orlando a couple of months ago, the only seat left when I reserved was 13E. Figures it was the one no one wanted - row 13, middle seat. The morning of the flight I logged on and moved to 12F, window seat, exit row. I turned around once on the plane and some poor tall guy got stuck with 13E!
