We are temporarily living in Brisbane so instead of flying direct from Gatwick we are flying indirect through LAX. Our flights are all on one ticket but I'm not sure I understand how luggage works.

One of the airport advisors has said they will tag our bags all the way through to MCO but we will have to retrieve them at LAX, go through customs then leave them in the transit area before changing terminals for our flight.

Is this a similar process to flying indirect from the UK? Can anyone advise what a transit area looks like so I know how to find where to leave the bags?

it's the same process as when flying from the UK.

it's quite straightforward.

after immigration, go to bagage claim and get your bags

proceed through customs.

just after customs, you'll see a desk with a conveyor belt and staff. If it's not just right after customs, follow the connecting flights signs. But it's usually right behind the customs area. you can't miss it.

Make sure you get off the plane asap. don't hang around. we flew to Philadelphia from Heathrow and arrived with 2 1/2 for our next flight. Ended up running to the boarding gate. you have to wait in lie at immigration then go through security again plus collect your bags and hand them back in again. All with other airline queueing up too for different flights. we were straight off plane but still had a wait and was last on the plane!

when you check in at brisbane, just make sure they have indeed tagged you all the way to MCO.
I ALWAYS make them show me the tags to see that MCO is on it so I KNOW that they've tagged it through.
It has happened to me that they've made a mistake...
so just have them reconfirm to you that they are tagging you all the way to orlando...
then as everyone said, when you get to LAX, you'll first have to go through immigration (passport control), then you'll have to pick up your luggage, take it through customs, then give your luggage back at the connecting desk (just past customs - ask the customs guy, he'll point you in the right direction to get to the connecting desk to drop off your luggage)....then you head for your next airplane (meaning going through security again)..
but on the bright side, when you get to orlando, you'll be arriving as a domestic flight....so you just hop off the plane, pick up your luggage and you are done!!!
