I just bought a digital camera and was wondering about how many and/or size memory cards I will need for my trip. We'll be there for 1 week. About how many pics for each size card?

I think it depends on what the megapixels you have on your camera.

I just bought another XD card (those teeny tiny ones) for my Fuji.
It was a 128mb card.

According to the back of the package for XD cards if you have a 2 megapixel camera a 128mb card will let you take about 150 pictures. If you have a 3 megapixel camera then you should be able to take approx. 108 pictures with a 128mb card.

After talking to some of my friends I decided to go with the 128mb card. My one friend had a huge card and lost it. She also said her brother had a big card and when he went to get the pictures printed the card didn't work. Hmm. I've never had any problem though.

This is just the info on the XD cards. I'm not sure about the cards for other sized cameras.

We are taking 2 XD cards for our digital, my good 35mm camera, plus some disposable cameras for the boys and my camcorder.

Thanks. I have a Fuji as well (2.0 mega pixel) I think I'll buy two 128mb cards and hope that'll be enough.

I have a Fuji digicam and using 2 megapixel normal (not the fine setting) I can get 158 pics on a 64mb card.

I've found I don't really need the 2 meg fine setting and my pics come out really nice. If you're printing out 4x6s, the 2 meg normal setting should be enough.

If you have a laptop, then you can download your pics everyday to the laptop. Or if you're staying someplace where they have a business center you can upload to snapfish/ofoto/shutterfly etc everyday too. That'll keep your card empty for the next day and you won't have to worry about space.

Just wanted to add that Walmart has a 128 mb xD memory card made by Olympus that works with our Fujis for $56.63. I believe it was in their flyer that started on Sunday. I just bought mine there today.

I beg to differ, from my own experiment (taking the same object using 4MP vs 2MP camera with the exact same lighting and angles), even at 4x6 you can easily tell the difference between 4MP vs 2MP.

Therefore, 2MP fine-mode vs 2MP normal-mode (recorded at half the file size) will also give approximately the same quality difference.

It also depends on the resolution setting. The better the quality, the more mb it takes on the card.

It'll be cheaper to buy one 256mb card rather than 2 128mb cards. That's also one less card to lose.

Just for the record, I have a 4.0mp Olympus. On the next to the highest resolution I can get 228 pictures on a 256mb card. I've never bumped to the highest resolution to see what I can get there, but I think the number is around 180.

You get 90 pictures on a 256 mb card (olympus 4 mp) on the highest resolution setting (I think it's called SHQ setting).

I travel with my laptop and burn the pictures onto a disk everyday so that I never run out of room.

Also if you know you that you are running out of space you can run to walmart and the card put on cd. at least that is what my sister is telling me and I am planning on doing.

Correct... but what happens when you do lose that one card? You lose all your pictures instead of 1/2 your pictures.

How often do you take the card out though? I've had my camera for 6 months and the card has only been out once. I understand some folks take their cards to Wal Mart or wherever for processing, but I just upload everything from home. I just don't fear losing the card, especially not at WDW. It's not like it's going to just fall out of the camera. I'd have to make a conscious effort to go through 2 steps to get it out. IMO it seems like it'd be easier to lose a card if you were carrying two different ones around and swapping them out than it would be to have a single card that you never removed from the camera.

My fear is not the loss of card, but the corruption of card. These things are not very stable at all and can corrupt rather easily.

I bought a small case that is made to specifically hold these cards. It is nice because I can just keep it in my camera bag and not worry about losing the card by itself.

Your sister is correct and it is less expensive than doing it at Disney.

I have yet to have one corrupt on me. That would be awful!!! Happily, I buy the kind with a lifetime guarantee (unfortunately, that would not replace the photos.) I take three with me. I fill them fast.

Yup, but you and I are using CF and there is no protruding contacts on a CF card (unlike XD, SD and MS).

However, just be careful when you're transferring your image to a PC (if you're using the camera) because if the battery died while you're transferring, you will lose the picture file (and sometimes the CF card).

I have a handy dandy Zio and a drive for all media in the computer. I would never waste battery power for a transfer. :)
