person. How do we figure out which way is cheaper?

My parents are going down with us. We are all going to do dining but dad said he thought he could get tickets cheaper as he is retired Military. I said he's probably right but I was pretty sure he had to at least get 1 base ticket for each of them to get the dining plan [I checked here and learned it was true]...

so is there a website that shows total cost of buying 1 base and tickets elsewhere vs. all through disney?? Can he get us tickets with his military rate if this is the case? If he can't get us tickets, would I be better for my family of 5 [3 children] to do AAA rate or something and the 1 day base?? I just can't imagine it would be 'that' much cheaper, but who knows...

Thanks.

Trish

You will not save money with the one day base and then buying other tickets elsewhere. The cost of the days gets less each day you add on but the first day of each ticket will still be around 70 dollars so buying 2 different tickets you would have 2 days at full price before the cost of the days dropping. Maybe you should print up some menus and price out some sample meals that you think you would order and show your dad the savings you would have each day by using the DDP. I am sure this would be much greater than the small amt you would save buying your tickets elswhere. We saved at least 50-100 dollars a day on meals last year with the DDP.

We are military so I've been going through the same thing. The discounted military tickets are not much cheaper than regular tickets so it is not cost effective to buy a one day also. Just do the DDP and tickets all through Disney. The DDP is such a deal for my family that it will cost less for us to do a package through Disney with DDP than to stay at SOG and get all the military discounts. Go to shadesofgreen.org and you can check out all the discounted ticket prices for yourself if you want, a link is on the left hand side to get to ticket prices :-)

I thought I read somewhere that military paid the same price for tickets as everyone else - just no taxes......

You have to buy the military ones through your base or through Shades of Green. The price difference is not significant so it's really not worth it. The stars and stripes ticket, which has park hopping and water parks is $274 for 5 days adult. The same type ticket on WDW online is $286 plus tax. If you don't want water parks then you just need to go through Disney.

The one day base ticket 70ish the 7 day base ticket 200ish so to break even buying a one day ticket for the plan then buying 7 day elsewhere you would need to have a $70 discount or in this case a 35% discount. I looked it up recently to see if the discount was worth finding out if hubby could get access to these discounts since he works on the base but the discount was very very small (had seen someone else post they got a major discount), not even as good as undercover tourist which with the mousesaver discount on top of it seems to be the best reputable discount and definitely doesnt come close to coverin the cost of a one day ticket much less save anything.

yep, dh is in the air force, and we went thru all the figuring...it's a better deal to get the package with DDP. Also, check out AAA, it was worth the $54 membership to save $300 for the total cost of the package!
