If I have to change planes during my flight home, do I have to check in twice? They both have different flight numbers, one in the early afternoon and one later. I want to make sure I check in at the 24 hr. mark to get a good boarding number.

:rotfl2:We have done this and only had to check in once at the PHL airport. Not sure where we got the next boarding passes though.

You only have to check in once each way as long as you booked both legs of the trip in the was sw has them set up. If you booked it though as two seperate transactions and have two different confirmation numbers you would need to check in for each flight seperately. You'll get both boarding passes at this time as well when you check in

I'll give you an example to explain it better... I flew to charlotte, nc from milwaukee wi with a layover in atlanta and a flight number change. On the way to nc I only had to check in once since I booked the flights as a one way ticket togeather. To come home to wi though, I had booked the flight from nc to atlanta as one transaction and atlanta to wi as a seperate one for the reason of making sure I have enough time to get dinner with friends in atlanta. I had to check in for each flight seperately for the return trip. I hope it makes sense.

It's only one transaction, so it should make it easier. I guess I will get two different boarding numbers, but what about the one that is later? Technically I will be checking in more than 24 hours with the second leg. Is this possible?

Yep, you will be checking in for both flights at 24 hrs before the first flight, giving you the advantage over the people only flying on that second flight. You'll probably have an early boarding number for that second flight (like A40 on first, A20 on second - as a broad example).
